This suite of five stories hits all of Ishiguro's signature notes, but the shorter form mutes their impact. In Crooner, Tony Gardner, a washed-up American singer, goes sloshing through the canals of Venice to serenade his trophy wife, Lindy. The narrator, Jan, is a hired guitar player whose mother was a huge fan of Tony, but Jan's experience playing for Tony fractures his romantic ideals. Lindy returns in the title story, which finds her in a luxury hotel reserved for celebrity patients recovering from cosmetic surgery. The narrator this time is Steve, a saxophonist who could never get a break because of his loser ugly looks. Lindy idly strikes up a friendship with Steve as they wait for their bandages to come off and their new lives to begin. In the final story, Cellists, an unnamed saxophonist narrator who, like Jan, plays in Venice's San Marco square, observes the evolving relationship of a Hungarian cello prodigy after he meets an American woman. The stories are superbly crafted, though they lack the gravity of Ishiguro's longer works (Never Let Me Go; Remains of the Day), which may leave readers anticipating a crescendo that never hits. Ishiguro blends musical concepts with their literary counterparts in his latest work, and Nocturnes has the ephemeral quality of a song cycle with recurring themes and motifs developed in different prose keys. Though critics admired Ishiguro's lovely writing, "unassuming to the point of near-invisibility, like a lake whose still surface belies the turbulent currents beneath" (Los Angeles Times), they took issue with his characters—insubstantial and unconvincing when compared to the haunting creations found in his novels—and his implausible plot developments. Perhaps Entertainment Weekly summed it up best by stating that Nocturnes, by any other writer, would be praiseworthy; by a celebrated author like Ishiguro, it can best be likened to a minor work from a master composer.

Involving Collection with One Great Story

"Cellists", the final story in NOCTURNES, is superior work. In this story, a young cellist, Tibor, works closely with an unconventional teacher, Eloise, who makes him feel like he is a superior musician. Eventually, the story shows that Eloise, who considers both herself and Tibor to be virtuosos, has a sensitivity to music that is beyond her musicianship. Nonetheless, their musical interaction has a lifetime effect on Tibor, who thereafter has to adapt his talent and sense of virtuosity to his opportunities.

IMHO, the four other stories in NOCTURNES are less successful. Why? In "Cellists", Ishiguro presents, explores, and resolves a situation. But in his other stories, he captures characters after a transformational event has occurred ("Crooner") or life-shaping attitudes have formed ("Nocturne"). Or, his stories capture moments before an emotional situation has attained focus ("Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Malvern Hills"). These stories, in other words, present, but don't really resolve a dynamic. They read like they could be chapters in longer works that Ishiguro will never write.

The subtitle of NOCTURNES, "Five Stories of Music and Nightfall", is atmospheric and right for Ishiguro, whose stories don't really convey a clear sense of place, even though he identifies the location of his first four stories as Venice, London, Malvern Hills, and Hollywood. These stories unfold in dream-like bubbles, where the characters and the small decisions they make often seem a trifle weird and implausible.

Even so, an alternative and more telling subtitle might be "Five Stories of Success and Relationships," since the issue of success within difficult or strange relationships is at or near the center of these stories. Recommended.

Do not bother.

Had high hopes but, alas. Each story started well but ended mysteriously. In other words, the endings made no sense. I would not recommend it. Ishiguro's best: The Remains of the Day and, my all time favorite(which I read twice) Never Let Me Go. He is a good writer, is a pleasure to read but, I like my stories to make sense.

This book made me understand NLP and some proven techniques. really enjoyed this book. short but good read. although I've read a lot of books about NLP, its good to have something to read that refreshes my mind on NLP. giving this book 5 star simply because, it was well written and fun to read. informative too!

Don't waste your money...

I don't know how this book could help anyone "understand" NLP. I is very short, jumps multiple pages at a time. and only gives you one technique for different outcomes. No explanation of NLP, how it works, why or how to structure language for a given result. Don't waste your money on this one.

Deserves to Be Remembered and Is Still Somewhat Suitable to Learn From

Max Born was the first to give the probability interpretation to the Schrodinger model, and this book is, besides being still in many ways an excellent introduction to elementary chemistry and physics, an important historical contribution to scientific pedagogy. It is imaginative and stimulating. I have the first Dover edition (1951), an over-sized paperback, with the "flip films" printed along the left and right margins. I am not sure if they are in other editions -- or of their quality; I would imagine they would be well depicted in all others. Like Gamow's "1,2 3, ... Infinity" and Eddington's "Space, Time and Gravitation" it deserves to be preserved although there have been advances in the sciences and newer methods of presentation have been developed since their publication. Born's book is entirely suitable summer reading for an interested high-school student before taking chemistry, but he or she should also glance through the textbook. In many ways Restless Universe will be much better reading than the modern textbook, but one had better know what the modern periodic table looks like also and be aware of the gaps. It was written in an era when students and the general public were not assumed to be innumerate dim-wits: The math will not be, however, too difficult for the reasonably educated person. For the person who is interested in the scientific history, it is interesting to see how some scientific data has changed since this edition.

Straight from the horse's mouth

Max Born was one of the prime movers in the development of quantum mechanics. He also produced several books for a general audience, and this is one of them. It was written in 1936, with a postscript chapter that tries to bring things a bit more up to date (at least to 1951 when this Dover edition was first published). One of the most interesting features of this book is the inclusion of seven "flip books", which are included in the margins of most pages. By flipping the pages one can see the motion of atoms, operation of a Hertzian oscillator, the scattering of a particles, the motion of electrons in H atoms, and the rotation of orbital planes.

The book begins with the kinetic theory of gases and uses this to develop the general concepts of Newtonian mechanics and thermodynamics. This treatment is devoid of mathematics and is a great introduction to physics, written for a general audiences, but with insights that physicists may also find interesting. It is suitable for high school students and non-science major college students. The book then proceeds to two chapters that cover electrons and ions, and waves and particles. These chapters cover the fundamentals of relativity theory and quantum mechanics. Again the treatment here is quite general and non-mathematical. These sections are still quite relevant even after 70 years, but after these chapters the book starts to show its age.

The final two chapters of the book deal with the structure of the atom and nuclear physics (circa 1936). The structure of the atom chapter gives a very nice overview of the development of the Bohr atom, with the modifications made by Sommerfeld, Pauli and Dirac. It covers the development of quantum numbers, electron orbits, and how this explains the observed atomic spectra. This chapter is probably of more interest to physicists than for a general audience, but it is explained well and is not too complex, so someone without a physics background should not become completely lost. The final chapter covers nuclear physics, primarily isotopes. Nuclear physics has advanced so much since 1951 that this chapter is mostly only of historical interest. After the material covered in the original 1936 book there is a brief postscript chapter trying to bring things up to 1951. This chapter is very general, and while it briefly mentions some advances in quantum electro dynamics, these references are very general and are mostly of historical interest. The rest of this postscript is really just historical, dealing with topics such as the impact of science on WWII (mostly the atomic bomb, but since the author was not actually involved with this work it is extremely general and very superficial).

This is a great book for a high school student interested in science. Those interested in the history of science and old science books will also like this book as it is a classic, written by a master.

A classic Dover edition that uses page margins to create flip books of physical phenomena like kinetic theory of gases.

After another classic (The Mechanical Universe) that used animations (by James Blinn of NASA), physics is much better understood. But Born did this back in 1936. Good show, Max!

About the Author
J�rgen Todenh�fer is a German author, politician, a former judge, and journalist. He studied law and political science at the Universities of Munich, Paris, Bonn and Freiburg and received his doctorate in law from the University of Freiburg.

Todenh�fer became a judge in 1972 and was elected to the German parliament that same year. During his eighteen years in politics and as party spokesman for development policy and arms control, he attracted as much public attention for his political activities as he did for his humanitarian endeavors. In 1975, he traveled to Chile and met with the then dictator Augusto Pinochet, paving the way for the release of 4,500 political prisoners. In the 1980s he visited Soviet-occupied Afghanistan multiple times and raised money for refugees. After his political career he joined one of Europe’s largest publishing companies, Hubert Burda Media.

Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11 he was outspoken in his opposition to the U.S.’s war in Afghanistan and critical of the planned campaign against Iraq. He argued fervently in favor of diplomatic solutions. To better understand the relationship between the Western and the Muslim world, Todenh�fer has traveled with Afghan freedom fighters to Soviet occupied Afghanistan, to Algiers during the Algerian War, and to Tunisia during the crisis of Bizerte. He has visited other Arab and Muslim countries on countless occasions. Thanks to his experience in the courtroom, Todenh�fer firmly believes that you cannot judge a case until you have heard from both sides. He urged the U.S. governments to settle their conflicts with Iraq, with Syria and with Iran through negotiations and took up this matter in direct contact with the governments of Muslim countries.

In 2014 he became the first Western journalist to be granted access to territories controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (formerly referred to as ISIS), where he met with gun wielding child soldiers and interviewed ISIS fighters, prisoners, and members of the public caught up in the battle for Iraq and Syria.

Todenh�fer has published numerous best-selling books in Germany, sharing his conviction that peace should be achieved through negotiations only. He donates the royalties that he receives for his books and the larger part of his private wealth to humanitarian projects for children in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Israel/Palestine, Syria, and the Congo.

Great Insight into Daesh and those who join

I found this book very fascinating but I don't share the author's strange sense of fairness.

I believe the book accurately portrays life under Daesh as well the psychotic nature of fundamentalism. It gives some interesting insight into the mindset of many who leave their lives for they believe is this paradise of clear-cut rules and Authoritarianism. This is really another story in line with Jim Jones and other cults through time. Couldn't put the book down and I highly recommend.

Interesting at first but...

The book is great up until the end when he lectures you about how the west is as bad as ISIS and shames you into thinking that we started the reign of Islamic terror that's sweeping the globe and not the jihadis desire to force the entire world to live by their sick, repressive laws.

Good to know, read it, be it intro and simple uncensored explanation of origins in Chapter One, or brief big picture historical context in Chapter Ten, or nitty-gritty frightening and sad details in other chapters. Oddly useful

I learned how to relax, and gradually see "SEX" written in advertising. I was able to show other people how to see it.

Then one day I saw it written on a log, and later on a stone. This taught me something important about how the evidence of my own senses can be altered by social motivation, and gave me insight into cult behavior. Perhaps not what the author was trying to convey, but well worth the price of the book, in the end.

A very informative book,but not so nice to trick folk into buying things under a spell.If your product is worth buying then it will sell itself through word of mouth not putting someone under a distraction spell.It makes you wonder how many purchaces we have made that we wouldn`t have,this could be the reason for all the garage sales.Attics full of things and overflowing pantries.I am sorry the price is so high,more folk should read it so they could be aware and realize they have choices and buy, making wise decisions instead of like automatic robots.
