Superb Profile of a Film Giant

Kudos to Frank Caso for producing this superb study, meticulously researched and elegantly written, that helps us to understand and appreciate better one of our greatest film directors. Reflecting the priorities of its subject, who consistently eschewed both fame and money, Caso focuses on what mattered most to Altman: his work – which was prodigious! Starting as a maker of industrial films, Altman honed his craft for a decade on such hit TV programs as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Combat! and then went on to direct (and in many cases also write and produce) more than 40 films over several decades.

During that time, Altman was both acclaimed by critics and derided – for being obscure, artsy, and resistant to popular tastes. Caso avoids these assessments. Instead, he lets Altman’s films speak for themselves, but expertly elucidates our understanding of them by examining Altman’s technical innovations, his thematic obsessions, and his outsider perspective as social critic and satirist. By viewing his films as a body of work, we come to see Altman for what he truly was -- a visionary filmmaker, who refused to compromise his art for profit and never stopped experimenting and taking risks.

This book inspired me, as I read it, to watch again more than a dozen Altman films, and I’m grateful to Caso for that experience. After more than 40 years, there’s still nothing to match the exuberant irreverence of M*A*S*H or the stunning imagery of McCabe & Mrs. Miller. It’s too bad that Altman’s career was such an uphill battle, given the greediness of our film industry and the tendency of American audiences to prefer passive entertainment to interesting and engaging films. But this fine book may stimulate a renewed interest in Altman and help to ensure the recognition and attention he deserves.

A first-class study of the films and personality of Robert Altman, for scholars and film buffs

Our college library just acquired this beautifully written work, that situates Robert Altman in the pantheon on American directors, and explains his poorly understood turns in and out of public favor, and his special and rather private relationship during his out time with the theater, exploring new genres and techniques. Caso makes it clear as well, in specifics, just what it is that makes an Altman film.

I was especially interested in Altman's use of Christian imagery and symbology. I'd not been aware of his ultimate rejection, like that of Bresson, of his own religious background.

Caso's style is joyfully intimate -- his chatty footnotes are a joy in themselves, such as the one explaining the post-WWII joke on the names of Chief Sitting Bull and Admiral Bull Halsey.

Caso being a thorough scholar, his bibliography alone is worth the price of the book: here is the essential road map for any serious Altman scholar.

Wonderful YA read!

There are simply not enough young adult romances out there like The Dating Tutor by Melissa Frost. Believe me, I've scoped out a ton of them to know. I've been so caught up lately in YA books that push the limits and the boundaries of this genre at times, that I often forget that authors write these books for Young Adults...not for woman of my age. So for me to lose myself completely in a story that has not a single swear word, or reference to drugs, or alcohol, is like finding a rare diamond in the rough. I'm not saying I don't enjoy the angsty teen reads, I'm simply saying that it was absolutely a breath of fresh air to read a book that was so clean, sweet, and beyond memorable that I wish there was a sequel in the making.

First we have our adorable tom-boy heroine, Ellie. She's gotten herself a date. A first date. but she has absolutely no idea how to go about being a girly girl. So she enlists the help of her best friend, who just so happens to be a boy, to get her to that datable level. Thus begins the adorable tale of the unexpected.

I adored Ellie. She was real, and she was so sweet, and na�ve and all things funny. She's awkward, but doesn't let it pull her down. She's a very, very likable heroine. Alec...a boy that I could easily see my own little girls falling in love with someday. He's got a darker side, but its expected. He's a little protective and the ultimate BBF for young girls everywhere. And yeah, I can't deny the fact that I was swoony just a little bit myself. It's not illegal though. It's fictional. :)

The Dating Tutor was a fast paced read, right around seventy pages. But it was so consuming, and just right for me to escape with!! With very lovable characters, a smooth writing style and enough drama to carry its readers along, I very much recommend The Dating Tutor to anyone looking for an all-out fantastic young adult, contemporary novella. Ms. Frost, you have earned a fan in me, for sure!! Now how about a book in Alec's point of view? Just a suggestion :)

Adorable!

Okay yes, this book may seem a little too juvenile if that, but I seriously loved it. I have no shame. I go through books in a matter of hours and I may have finished this book a little earlier than that, but I honestly wanted it to be so much longer. This book is the definition of a light read that just makes you feel insanely good inside once finished. The Dating Tutor just fills you with envy of Ellie because she gets the greatest guy in the world as her best friend. It was just sweet to know that Alec cared enough about Ellie to help her with something as simple as a date. It was also cute to see how helpless Ellie was during this whole process. It's always a good thing to read a book like this once in a while or all the time depending on who you are. I have read this many times and it still gives puts a stupid smile on my face along with a good mood. I can guarantee that it will do the same to everyone else who decides to give this book a try :)

The Key to the Mysteries

While this is a great effort to transcribe the first 3 Mahavishnu albums, there are somethings that the other reviewers are not saying. I did buy this book in the 70's and hung on to it, although, it is in pretty rough shape these days. Two points I would like to add to the other reviews:

1. First of all there is no tab. This pretty well a given these days with guitar transcriptions. However, if you are in this kind of territory, that may not matter to some. It is too bad that when the publishers decided to re-release this that they didn't go the extra step and tab it with John's input. Some the chords that are in the "Meeting of the Spirits" and others, have some pretty tricky fingering. It would have been nice to see some kind of a chord chart for those tunes at the very least.
2. There are no transcriptions for the solos. So if you're hoping to crack John's solos or Hammer's for that matter, you're on your own. However, it does contain suggested modes and scales that can be used in the tunes and in one of them he includes a Astrology chart of types with the right scales to tune you in with your sign.

I feel these should have been addressed rather than just a re-issue. Having said that, I do not want to diminish the effort it took to transcribe John's incredible creative offering from that time. His music truly blew a lot of worlds apart when it came out and it echoes to this day. Many great guitarists followed suit after these albums came out - Santana, Beck, etc. John Mclaughlin is one of the Godfathers of fusion, and probably the Godfather of fusion guitar, for sure.

One final word on this book. If you are thinking of purchasing it, I would highly recommend buying "The Gateway to Rhythm" with Mclaughlin and Selva on DVD explaining the Konokol rhythm method that John uses in writing his tunes. To try and count or feel your way through this stuff in a traditional manner, is almost impossible, especially on some of the very odd meters. There are transcriptions for free download at Mclaughlin's website on the Konokol examples.
Together with the book and the DVD. I would say you are going to be very busy for quite some time. Good luck with your music.

At last

I have been waiting for this book for thirty years. I missed it the first time around when it was published in the late 1970s. Luckily it has been reprinted.

It is fairly complex due to the nature of the music and the mini score notation. However, should you want to play some of John McLaughlin's music and or understand its structure this book is a good place to start.

The scores have been produced with a great deal of care. Most of the scores are laid out with the 'normal' early Mahavishnu Orchestra instrumentation (bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, and violin). The scores seem to have been faithfully produced from the original recordings, and additional parts have been given where necessary. Useful key/mode guides for ad libbing have also been given.

Perfect Reprint of this Musical Treasure Map

Anyone who might be looking to emulate the MO should know this book is where it all begins. This is an exact reprint of the original scorebook and maintains all original dimensions except for a stronger spine and a gloss cover on the front and back. My dad's original copy of this songbook has seen better days so I was excited to discover and order this new printing.

Guru McLaughlin has included nearly every MO song within this book. The mini-scores give an excellent musical vantage from which one can start to understand the complicated nature of creating this incredible music. Even the most avid sightreader will need to take some time to work out all those insane 64th note arpeggios in 13/8, 9/8, 7/4, 6/4, 5/4, etc...

Of course, included in the front of the book is the key to this treasure map. McLaughlin has laid out the modal structures one can use to derive, create, and exploit in the many areas calling for improvisation. The theory page is an excellent reference for practicing and deriving modes that are crucial if you're gonna try to sound like these masters. Even those with little theory knowledge or experience can begin to utilize and understand some of the basic functions of these modes after studying this page.

If you're a musician, and you like the MO, there is absolutely no reason to not buy this book. It's perfect, they're perfect, and you'll be on the road to perfection if you spend enough time studying this glorious masterpiece.

Amazingly good!

It is difficult to adequately express how amazing this was. It's all the spoken parts of Hamlet as Shakespeare wrote them, spoken by characters in a comic book. It is set in the future, in space, where Denmark is it's own planet or something. This doesn't change the story, since characters are positioned the same to one another. Personalities and stories aren't time specific like clothes are.

It has pretty good art. The style shifts to different levels of detail based on what's appropriate for that scene. Transitions between scenes and how characters are introduced are done well. So, just as a comic book this flows well.

Shakepeare as a comic makes far more sense than does reading a play. Hamlet is a play. Hamlet was meant to be watched. A comic combines the language with a linear visual. This might even be better than a play; at least, for me it was much more gripping than Shakespeare as a play. In a play, the visual is there, but due to language barriers, I haven't gotten nuances and all from the language that I probably would have picked up on had I learned English in the 1600s. However, in comic book form I could reread lines, or read more slowly or quickly and I had the visual there on the page with the lines mixed into it. The book was really gripping. I got so much more out of this than any other exposure to Shakespeare. I'm all about getting more manga Shakespeare.

I highly recommend this as a way of accessing Hamlet. Libraries and school libraries should consider getting a copy, since this is required reading for classes often enough that it will get wear, and, as I've said, is a very good way of really understanding Shakespeare's nuances. Also, it's just a good read in general as a comic and reasonably priced.

Embarrassingly Bad

In theory, the idea of paring illustrations with Shakespeare's text makes sense: his words were, after all, meant to be watched rather than simply read; but this is not the way to do it. Artists like Hayao Miyazaki have demonstrated that Manga has the potential to be a more serious art form than many assume, but projects like this give pause: the juxtaposition of Shakespeare's rich and vibrant language with utterly flat and lifeless illustrations is unsettling, and makes one wonder if there might be inherent limitations to what can be done with the medium.

More accurate title: Mangled Shakespeare

The cover of this book is misleading---the size of the wording implies that the text is partly 'manga,' but mostly 'Hamlet.' Sadly, the reality is that the book is 3/4 manga, 1/4 Hamlet.

The problems start with the cutting-edge, futuristic, dystopia setting. I'm not saying that Shakespeare can't be transferred successfully to other settings (because it can and has been done very well), but when people are talking to each through floating, virtual screens on one page, but a guy with a shovel is digging up skulls on another page, it just doesn't sync.

Worse than the problems with setting, this text doesn't seem to have much appreciation or sensitivity to what Shakespeare was actually doing. Huge passages are removed. Important information is elided. Beautiful language is abandoned on the cutting room floor. I'm ranting now, of course, but it just seems that if you're going to do Shakespeare, you should trust him enough to make his material the top-priority. (For a great example of what's possible, check out the Classics Illustrated version of Hamlet with artwork by Tom Mandrake.)

Back to the rant for just a second, using an ellipsis (e.g., "...") in every seventh dialogue balloon is gratuitous and uncalled-for.

With that out of my system, let me say that as far as the artwork goes, the book is great. While the figures are distorted beyond plausibility (a person with proportions of 11-heads tall?! I know that's part of manga-style, but please...), other elements of sequential art are handled very well. The dialogue balloons caught my eye, I think because of the generous white space that helps emphasize the wording. But even more, the background textures and page layouts were wonderful. On several pages I thought, "Aahh, so that's what McCloud was talking about...."

So, taken all in all, this version of Hamlet leaves quite a bit to be desired, but it's a great step towards what sequential art CAN do with sophisticated texts.

Couldn't put it down

I was waiting for this book to come out. Checked amazon and found that it was ready YAY boy was I happy!! I started reading it while in bed because I wanted to help myself get tired so I could fall asleep. Well, this is the wrong book for that. I stopped reading at 3:40 am because I had finished the book. ARG now I have to wait for her next book and I have been searching to find out when that can be expected but there is no news on that. I've been to her web page, but nothing. I just might start the series over again for the fun of it! I agree with those who have said to get the whole series, it's worth it!

Great book!

This book is probably my favoritw of the series so far! I love the little plot twists that show up as ypu get farther into the book. I also am glad that we got some more details about Callie's mom's diary. all through book two I was hoping for even the littlest mention of it! i cannot wait for book four! according to Daisy Piper's website, it sould be coming out any time now...

Whew! There's a rough ride in this one.

This is the most recent in the Callie series and she gets herself in a very dangerous situation this time - oh my, oh my! But the old legends say she will deliver her kingdom into safety and rid it of it's enemys.So we'll see. ( And there's a new guy in Callie's life - of royal decent - and a suitable "acquaintance".)

William Byrd’s Gradualia is one of the most unusual and elaborate musical works of the English Renaissance. This large collection of liturgical music, 109 pieces in all, was written for clandestine use by English Catholics at a time when they were forbidden to practice their religion in public. When Byrd began to compose the Gradualia, he turned from the penitential and polemical extravagances of his earlier Latin motets to the narrow, carefully ordered world of the Counter-Reformation liturgy. It was in this new context, cut off from his familiar practice of choosing colorful texts and setting them at length, that he first wrote about the "hidden and mysterious power" of sacred words to evoke a creative response.

Liturgy and Contemplation in Byrd’s Gradualia responds to Byrd’s own testimony by exploring how he read the texts of the Mass and the events of the church calendar. Kerry McCarthy examines early modern English Catholic attitudes toward liturgical practice, meditation, and what the composer himself called "thinking over divine things." She draws on a wide range of contemporary sources ― devotional treatises, commentaries on the Mass, poetry, memoirs, letters, and Byrd’s dedicatory prefaces ― and revisits the Gradualia in light of this evidence. The book offers a case study of how one artist reimagined the creative process in the final decades of his life.

Boring book about great music

Some of the most beautiful music to come out of the English Renaissance, and this book manages to make it seem dull. There are a few interesting points about Elizabethan Catholic life, but I pity any admirer of Renaissance music who tries to slog through this dense and over-specialized book. Do you love Byrd? Save your $110 (really, Routledge?) and buy some CDs instead.

Deep and thought-provoking

A super short story that can be quickly read in a single sitting, with a concise description of an alternate world in which social credits are used as payment, and a man with a terminal medical condition faces some challenges. A lot of heavy topics seemed to be crammed into these few pages, but it definitely makes me think, “What would I do?” And how money factors into almost everything we do. But just how true is the phrase “Time is money” when you’re referring to your time left on earth. A great read if you like short stories with a lot of depth.
