Being Digital, by Nicholas Negroponte

In lively, mordantly witty prose, Negroponte decodes the mysteries--and debunks the hype--surrounding bandwidth, multimedia, virtual reality, and the Internet, and explains why such touted innovations as the fax and the CD-ROM are likely to go the way of the BetaMax. "Succinct and readable. . . . If you suffer from digital anxiety . . . here is a book that lays it all out for you."--Newsday.

Amazon.com Review
As the founder of MIT's Media Lab and a popular columnist for Wired, Nicholas Negroponte has amassed a following of dedicated readers. Negroponte's fans will want to get a copy of Being Digital, which is an edited version of the 18 articles he wrote for Wired about "being digital."

Negroponte's text is mostly a history of media technology rather than a set of predictions for future technologies. In the beginning, he describes the evolution of CD-ROMs, multimedia, hypermedia, HDTV (high-definition television), and more. The section on interfaces is informative, offering an up-to-date history on visual interfaces, graphics, virtual reality (VR), holograms, teleconferencing hardware, the mouse and touch-sensitive interfaces, and speech recognition.

In the last chapter and the epilogue, Negroponte offers visionary insight on what "being digital" means for our future. Negroponte praises computers for their educational value but recognizes certain dangers of technological advances, such as increased software and data piracy and huge shifts in our job market that will require workers to transfer their skills to the digital medium. Overall, Being Digital provides an informative history of the rise of technology and some interesting predictions for its future.

From Publishers Weekly
Negroponte, a Wired columnist and founder of MIT's Media Lab, presents an accessible guide to the cutting edge of digital technology and his predictions for its future.

From Library Journal
Negroponte, popular columnist for Wired magazine and founding director for the MIT Media Lab, describes how advancements in computer technology and telecommunications will transform workplaces, households, and educational institutions. He explains how this revolution will change the way we live, think, and interact with one another and with technology and foresees some mind-boggling challenges that lie ahead in developing truly global systems for delivering multimedia and other forms of digitally based information. Negroponte characterizes the development of future information delivery systems as a battle between atoms, the components of books and other physical resources, and bits, the basic building blocks of information. In 1991, he predicted the eventual demise of libraries, those vast storehouses of atoms, in favor of bit-based purveyors of information. An important work for public and academic libraries.

Still digital after all these years
By A Customer
As old as this book is (35, in internet years), it is still visionary. Lucid, interesting, lively reading. Conversational. I'm not in an e-commerce company but I want to understand something of the changes ahead as we move to an information-based economy. If that's you, too, read this book, along with Berners-Lee's Weaving the Web; then read Evans and Wurster's Blown to Bits and (maybe) Kelly's New Rules for the New Economy, and you will have a bunch of new ideas, I promise.
I wish I'd read this book when it first came out.

Get Digital!
By Julie
What is Digital? Is it merely as simple as the "information superhighway?" Or, is it a complex web of intermingled electronics destined to replace everything home, hearth and workplace?
In this, the Technology Age, one is lead to believe it's either get on the bandwidth-to modify the phrase--or die a slow, excruciating information death, like a victim of Civil War Gangrene.
Negroponte takes all us pseudo-techies, the ones who are too ashamed to admit they just don't quite get `it', and guides us down the path of digital history. As a founder of MIT's Media Lab, a place where technology is studied for fun and academics, Negroponte is certainly qualified to discuss such things. He does so comfortably and simply, explaining digital technology in a concise and entertaining manner. The format is precise, the prose is easy-to-read. This is a man one could truly envision enjoying a cup of microwaved coffee with.
Negroponte explains technological history and its implications on society in basic terms that any literate luddite could process. The premise is based in a clever analogy: Atoms (the real, tangible items we see, touch, use each day) vs. Bits (it's the packets of information stupid!). Atoms are the tangible stuff that comprise everything physical; bottled water, books, computers. Bits are the invisibly-invisible minute pieces of information upon which much of modern society relies; credit as we swipe our bankcard at the grocery; on-demand instant information via the web; e-mail rather than antiquated parchment air-mail letters.
Understanding the digital phenomenon is easy with Negroponte. The chapters are almost flashcard/sound bite like. A brief introduction is followed by sub-sections that explain the technical stuff and offer familiar real-life comparisons. The chapter on bandwidth (that same bandwidth everyone seems to be bent on increasing these days) gives an account of what bandwidth means; its potential (more TV channels fer g'dsake!), and its complications (if government rations out bandwidth to a few big-media conglomerates, public access will be restricted and we'll have to pay more for those channels). Negroponte also discusses some failures in the digital age, HDTV for one. His thesis? HDTV? Been there, seen it, done it, forget it! Give me Digital-it's clearer, faster, and it's interactive.
The book is filled with visceral descriptions that relate technology to real life. Examples such as driving 160 KMP per hour are compared to faxing at 1.2 mbps (millions of bits per second). This is how fast we can and should want to be transferring those bits back and forth to each other.
Negroponte foresees potential benefits for citizens of a digital society. In the on-demand digitized marketplace, customers are still real people but their merchants become the computer. Thus, each of us has the potential to request what we want, (a TV program or an airline ticket) when we want it, where we want it, and at the price we want to pay. Think pay-per-view and priceline.com.
We will also have the capability of becoming more intelligent and time proficient thanks to pc browsers capable of knowing what we want on screen-even before we demand it. One need only look at the recent ads for etour.com, "surf without searching." (You register, get profiled, and are instantly delivered websites matching your interests).
However, some criticized Negroponte as being too optimistic. Technology that can recognize our eyeprint? Who cares? And then there's the popular fear of Internet addiction and the thought that all this info-on-demand will create generations of solitary, mouse-clicking, chip-crunching moles. Negroponte believes rather than become isolated, technology and computers connect us to cultures, people and ideas previously inaccessible to the average person--even if we have been sitting alone at the computer screen for three days running.
Some of Negroponte's scenarios may have seemed fantastical in 1995, but we truly have come to see many of his visions as day-to-day reality-cars with satellite navigation systems, recordable CDs, `intelligent interfacers' (our personalized browsers). Rather than go west young man, we should be cheering Be Digital! Thanks to Negroponte, we know why.

If Our Bodies Could Talk: A Guide to Operating and Maintaining a Human Body, by James Hamblin

"If you want to understand the strange workings of the human body, and the future of medicine, you must read this illuminating, engaging book." —SiddharthaMukherjee, author ofThe Gene

In 2014, James Hamblin launched a series of videos for The Atlantic called "If Our Bodies Could Talk." With it, the doctor-turned-journalist established himself as a seriously entertaining authority in the field of health. Now, in illuminating and genuinely funny prose, Hamblin explores the human stories behind health questionsthat never seem to go away—and which tend to be mischaracterized and oversimplified by marketing and news media. He covers topics such as sleep, aging, diet, and much more:

• Can I “boost” my immune system?
• Does caffeine make me live longer?
• Do we still not know if cell phones cause cancer?
• How much sleep do I actually need?
• Is there any harm in taking a multivitamin?
• Is life long enough?

In considering these questions, Hamblin draws from his own medical training as well from hundreds of interviews with distinguished scientists and medical practitioners. He translates the (traditionally boring) textbook of human anatomy and physiology into accessible, engaging, socially contextualized, up-to-the-moment answers. They offer clarity, examine the limits of our certainty, and ultimately help readers worry less about things that don’t really matter.

If Our Bodies Could Talk is a comprehensive, illustrated guide that entertains and educates in equal doses.

THE SUPERFICIAL PARTS

Butterfly children” are so called because their skin is like butterfly’s wings. The name is meant to convey extreme fragility. But the weakness in butterfly wings is only a product of the fact that we are some one hundred thousand times larger than butterflies. In terms of biomechanics, these wings are actually paradigms of efficiency: light enough to be operated by a flying worm a fraction of their size, yet strong enough to hold up under the intense shear force of the wind and torrential rain that would be for us like standing under Niagara Falls.

The skin of a butterfly child, on the other hand, is rather an abject failure of biomechanics. Because of one detail. The formal name of the disease is dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, or DEB. It’s traditionally considered a pathology of the skin, the domain of the dermatologist, because it renders the skin like tissue paper that has been left in the sun. Such skin falls apart at the lightest touch. The condition has no cure. It is the worst disease you’ve never heard of. I write that without presuming which diseases you have heard of. The trademarked motto of the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association is “the worst disease you’ve never heard of.” Its current executive director, Brett Kopelan, coined the phrase in earnest.

His daughter Rafi was born in a Manhattan hospital on November 19, 2007. Her mother, Jackie, was more than a little concerned that patches of skin were missing on their newborn’s hands and feet. She had been two weeks past due, and the doctors initially reassured Jackie and Brett that their baby had been “overcooked.” But the casual dismissal proved too casual when over the next few hours Rafi began bleeding. Nurses rushed her to the intensive care unit. There she would spend the first month of her life in complete isolation, undergoing a battery of tests, unable to be touched by her parents. After two weeks the doctors came to the Kopelans with a potential diagnosis, a name that would become their lives.

“They think it’s something called epi-dermo-lysis . . . bullosa?” Brett recalls saying in a harried phone call with his brother, who is chief of surgery at a hospital just across the river in New Jersey, to which the surgeon replied, “Oh, shit.” Brett ran to Google and read about DEB. His first thought was that it was the worst disease he’d never heard of.

On the short arm of the third of your twenty-three chromosomes sits a gene called COL7A1. It is responsible for the production of the protein that assembles collagen VII. Collagen proteins constitute all of the connective tissue in our bodies, and a third of our total protein. From the Greek for “glue,” collagen holds together everything from skin to ligaments and tendons. It comes in several known types (of which collagen VII is one).

Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare disease in several ways, not least in that much of the problem traces to a discrete gene. Most diseases are far more complex than any single gene can explain. But mutations in the COL7A1 gene seem to be responsible for all three major forms of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, of which Rafi’s is the most severe.

Collagen VII anchors our outer layer of skin (epidermis) to our base layer (dermis). Without it, the layers separate and the skin crinkles and blisters, coming off at the slightest provocation. When Rafi reflexively scratches an itch, she wounds herself. The seams on her shirt cause blisters. Many mornings she wakes up with her pajamas pasted to her skin in multiple places by dried blood. The extrication is grueling.

And because collagen VII provides structure throughout the organs of her body, this affects not just the skin, but the internal organs as well. Blisters and scars within her mouth and esophagus make it difficult to chew and swallow food. She has eye inflammation that can lead to blindness. She has a very high risk of developing an aggressive type of skin cancer at a young age. She has osteoporosis, syndactyly (fusion of the fingers), and mild heart failure.

Rafi’s form of epidermolysis bullosa affects fewer than one in a million infants. For those who survive, life does not involve much interaction with other people. So it is a disease of people whom we are not likely to come to know. The spectrum of what most of us consider normal in our day-to-day lives is skewed strongly away from conditions like EB, and toward small blemishes. If it weren’t, we might be more appreciative of the skin that we have, and the simple fact that it adheres to our bodies.

The average person has about six pounds of skin. Like most (though not all) organs, it’s essential to life. If you woke up one day and your skin had vanished, you would quickly die. In what remained of your short life, there would be problems socially. It’s the largest and most dynamic organ in the human body, constantly turning over and regenerating. Skin, along with hair, is unique among body parts in that it is dead cells we carry around. In any other organ, dead cells are discarded. But the cells in skin and hair stay along with us for a while and serve important functions, not least of which is social identity and thus the foundation on which the understanding of ourselves is built.

The skin we had last year—last season, even—is not the skin we have today. Most of the cells that compose our bodies are constantly dying and being replaced. Around 8 percent of our genes are not even human, but viral. We are born with viruses woven into our DNA, and we contain trillions of bacteria that are responsible for, among other things, the appearances of our faces, our body weights, and our states of mind. Our bodies are dynamic networks of genetic information shaped by experience, and microbes that change who we are in every moment. We are born with signals that will tell us to go bald when most people would appraise us more favorably if we had hair, and to be anxious when we needn’t be, and to get cancers that we tried hard to avoid. The doling out of years and health and happiness will not be fair.

The seemingly superficial parts, and the way they are perceived by ourselves and others, accumulate into how we understand ourselves, and then into how we move through the world and treat one another.

How can I tell if I’m beautiful? I mean in the purely superficial physical way that I know I shouldn’t care about but do because I am a person who exists in the world.

In 1909, Maksymilian Faktorowicz opened a beautification establishment in Los Angeles. Under the name Max Factor, he would become famous for his cosmetic products, which he sold as part of a pseudoscientific process of “diagnosing” abnormalities in people’s (mostly women’s) faces. He did this using a device he invented called the “beauty micrometer.” An elaborate hood of metallic bands held in place by an array of adjustable screws, the micrometer could be placed over a woman’s head and, as one of his ads at the time claimed, flaws almost invisible to the ordinary eye would become obvious. Then he could apply one of his “makeup” products, a term coined by Factor, to correct the flaw in this person: “If, for instance, the subject’s nose is slightly crooked—so slightly, in fact, that it escapes ordinary observation—the flaw is promptly detected by the instrument, and corrective makeup is applied by an experienced operator.” Even if putting on a metal hood that could tell people exactly why they’re not beautiful didn’t seem wrong on infinite levels, there was also the problem that Factor’s micrometer was contingent on an empirical definition of beauty. A device that tells people what’s wrong with them is predicated on an understanding of what is right. Max Factor’s approach is a textbook example of the sales tactic that is still so successful in selling body-improving products: convince people that there is a deficit in some concrete way, and then sell the antidote.

In the case of facial symmetry, some evolutionary biologists do believe that we are attracted to symmetric faces because they might indicate health and thus reproductive viability. From a strict perspective of evolutionary biology, someone with a prominent growth spiraling out of the side of their eye, for instance, might be viewed as a “maladaptive” choice for a mate. Instincts warn that this person may not survive through the gestation and child-rearing process, possibly not even conception. Best to move on.

But today most people survive long enough to reproduce and care not just for children, but grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even domesticated cats. We can be less calculating about who to mate with. We can and do afford ourselves attraction not to some standard of normalcy, but to novelty and anomaly.

While Factor was convincing everyone that they were empirically inadequate based on a standard of normalcy that he created to sell products, the University of Michigan sociologist Charles Horton Cooley proposed a more nuanced approach, called “the looking glass self.” The idea was that we understand ourselves based not on some empirical idea of what is right or wrong about us, but from how others react to us. It’s difficult to believe you’re physically attractive when the world treats you otherwise, and vice versa. “The thing that moves us to pride or shame,” he wrote in 1922, “is not the mere mechanical reflection of ourselves, but an imputed sentiment, the imagined effect of this reflection upon another’s mind.”

Cooley repopularized the timeless idea that other people are not just part of our world, or even merely important to our understanding of ourselves: They are everything. Technically there are individual humans, just as technically coral is a collection of trillions of tiny sessile polyps, each as wide as the head of a pin. Alone in the sea, the polyps would be nothing. Together they are barrier reefs that sink ships.

The idea of a looking-glass self could seem disempowering, in that our understandings of ourselves are subject to the perceptions of others. A less devastating way of thinking about a world of looking-glass people, I think, is the idea that everywhere we go, not only are we surrounded by mirrors, but we are mirrors ourselves. It’s not the face in the Max Factor machine that matters, but the way that face is received. We can’t always choose our mirrors, but we can choose the kind of mirrors we will be—a kind mirror, or a malevolent mirror, or anything in between.

Why do I have dimples?

The muscle that pulls the corners of your mouth up and back (a “smile”) is called the zygomaticus. In people with dimples, that muscle is shorter than in the average person and may be forked into two ends, one of which is tethered to the dermis of the cheek, which then gets sucked inward when the person smiles. This is one way that beauty happens.

It’s an anatomical anomaly, sometimes even referred to as a “defect.” That understanding comes from an oft-cited theme in biology: that form necessarily correlates with function. Everything must happen for some reason, right? If dimples are a form without a clear function, then it’s easy to dismiss them as defects. It would be easier to write this book if it were the case that our body parts either had a clear purpose or else represented defects or diseases. But we’re more complex and interesting than that.

Biological function is a concept foundational to understanding health and disease, and it’s defined most often as the reason that a structure or process came to exist in a system. We have opposable thumbs, by the etiological theory of biological function, because they gave us an advantage in using certain tools.

While form can help inform our understanding of function, though, few cases are so clear-cut as thumbs. Some beards grow, some skin peels, and some cheeks dimple because they evolved to do so in certain people under certain conditions. There is no “purpose,” teleologically, for beards to grow or skin to peel or cheeks to dimple.

Theoretically all functions should together contribute to our fitness—to keeping us alive and well, as populations—but they may not do so individually. In isolation, a particular bodily function—like sleeping, for instance—may seem to be only a weakness. Sleeping is a time when we might be eaten by birds. But it exists, according to leading theorists on the still outstanding question of why we sleep, because it augments the functions of other body parts.

Elements of our forms may also be vestigial, like wisdom teeth or appendices, relics that lost function over time as systems changed. There is a spectrum of vestigiality, with some parts trending toward obsolescence but not yet useless. Other parts may never have been functional, but simply emerged as side effects of the functions of other parts. (These are sometimes known as “spandrels,” an allusion to decorative flourishes in architecture that serve no purpose in supporting the structure.)

The overarching idea is that almost no body part can be explained in isolation. They make sense only in the context of whole people, just like whole people make sense only in the context of whole populations. In a parallel world, dimples are anomalies we would attempt to prevent or correct. But in this time and place we choose to desire and envy them. Sometimes even to create them by force.

If I didn’t have dimples, could I give them to myself?

In 1936, entrepreneur Isabella Gilbert of Rochester, New York, advertised a “dimple machine” that consisted of a “face-fitting spring carrying two tiny knobs which press into the cheeks.” Over time, this force should produce “a fine set of dimples.”

It didn’t, though, because that is not how dimples work.

If only as an alternative to that particular form of hell, we may be fortunate that today a surgeon can perform a twenty-minute procedure to suture a cheek muscle known as the buccinator to the interior surface of the skin of a person’s skin, creating a dimple. It can all be done without ever puncturing the skin from the outside, coming through the inside of the cheek and cutting out a little bit of the cheek muscle, then running a suture through that muscle to the undersurface of the skin in the cheek. Pull it tight, and the skin will pucker. This is all done while the person is awake.

The puckering is exactly the sort of outcome that cosmetic surgeons spend years perfecting the art of suturing in order to avoid. So it took a truly heterodox thinker to invent the procedure. Based in Beverly Hills, plastic surgeon Gal Aharonov considers himself the father of the American trend in dimple surgeries. “It wasn’t a trend before I started doing it,” he told me. That’s a phrase I rarely trust, but he does appear to have created the dimpling technique, about ten years ago.

Funny and factual--this book proves you can have your cake and eat it too
By Jane Hamblin
I love the videos called If Our Bodies Could Talk (especially the one about red wine being good for me), so when I saw the same guy had written a book, I had to check it out. I began laughing and, yes, learning, four sentences in. His stuff is down to earth and helpful. You can skip around to read topics that interest you. Even the things I was less interested in were just as good and made a lot of sense--and were funny. No charlatan, the author is a credit to medicine and print media. I bought five books just now for friends.

Research is shared in a humorous and easy to understand script
By Mary Kay Morrison
Hamblin has written a captivating book that answers every health care question imaginable. His format includes asking copious questions and exploring the answers through real life stories of people who have experienced a variety of health conditions. Research is shared in a humorous and easy to understand script. An example of this format includes my favorite story in the book. It is in response to the question; “Am I having a seizure?” As a child, Beth Usher had so many seizures a day that her parents finally made the incredibly difficult decision to have half of her brain removed. Her inspiring journey includes the use of humor in the recovery process. Although Beth still has some disabilities as a result of the surgery, she completed the AATH (Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor) Humor Academy program to become a CHP (Certified Humor Professional). Beth currently is a speaker presenting workshops titled “Always in My Right Mind”. Hamblin follows up on her story by exploring the research on topic rarely addressed in medical journals: “How is Laughter Medicine?” This book has my highest recommendation.

Fave book of 2017? I think so
By Jen Smith
Short review: Get this book. You'll not only laugh, but will learn a thing or two.

Long review: If Our Bodies Could Talk is a book that everyone will enjoy - from those that may have random bodily questions that they were too embarrassed to ask Google, to those that have backgrounds in Science and Medicine (and anywhere in between.) Worried about that contact being stuck in your brain? This will help. It's broken down into categories that allow the reader to skip around if you so wish, (although I recommend reading it from start to finish.) This is one of the few books that I've read in a little less than four days and laughed throughout. Jim manages to cover vast topics, from juice diets and fad eating, to everything in between without bias. It's a breath of fresh air to read a book that covers health, yet isn't trying to sell you on some weird supplements or products. If you enjoy reading Jim's Atlantic columns, or watching the video series If Our Bodies Could Talk, this will be right up your alley.

Good but...
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:89fa93bd9aa5fb706158206bcabd8845]]I just feel that Pixar artbooks are getting less fun to read. Maybe perhaps it's because there isn't anything in this book to read except for foreword by John Lasseter and director Peter Sohn.

First up, I've to say that I enjoy the artworks, the sketches, character designs, lighting studies, scene paintings and environment art. Enjoyed them more than I did for the Inside Out artbook. Sharon Calahan's lighting studies are terrific and eye catching, definitely the highlight for me in this book. The approach to the character design I feel, at least for Arlo and Spot, is quite close to comic characters you see in newspaper comic strips. Other dinosaurs have more detail.

My lack of enthusiasm for this book has got to do with the new way of presenting the artworks without any commentary, use of more than necessary white space and have simple sketches blown up huge. It started with The Art of Inside Out and now with The Art of Good Dinosaur.

Commentary provides more depth to the artworks, and not including them makes the book feel slightly hollow. When the drawings are interesting and you want understand the context behind them, there is nothing to read. The use of unnecessary white space does not help. They could have used better page layout to add significantly more artworks, at least to make up for the lack of commentary. While it's a pleasure to look at artworks that are printed huge, of which many in the book satisfyingly so, it would be better to enlarge detailed paintings rather than artworks without much detail. That would have given more impact to pieces that deserves more attention.

I like the artworks but this new presentation style is just not working for me and I'm a Pixar fan. I don't like the hollow feeling I get after going through the book.

It's a difficult book to rate. Maybe 3.5 out of 5 stars.

mostly because it's probably gonna be one of Pixar's most beautiful movies in terms of environment design
By Chris
So excited about this movie, mostly because it's probably gonna be one of Pixar's most beautiful movies in terms of environment design. Cars gave you a stunning view of west coast along route 66. And good dino is set based on landscape along Rocky mountains in Wyoming and Idaho.

Lots of lighting studies from Sharon Calahan!!!

"The art of the good dinosaur" is amazing!
By Amazon Customer
The good dinosaur is one of the most beautiful films that I have seen, and this book is just like the movie. It is very neat because they lay the art in order from the movie. You will feel like you're watching the movie again. The art pieces are so photo-realistic that it will blow your mind. They have everything from drawings, character designs, colorscript, concept art, etc. I have used it for several days now and I can't stop looking at it. If you like Pixar and The good dinosaur, you are going to love this book. I highly recommend it!

face. As myoid boss when I joined the discout market - who had worked as a "bond-salesman" on Wall Street during the "Great Crash" of 1929, through the Credit Anstalt crash, and served in British military intelligence during the Second World War - always used to say: "Remember! The telephone is not a secure instrument. " During the 1960s, foreign banks had flooded into London in pursuit of Eurodollar deposits. Arabs were spending their new found oil wealth in West End casinos. Ex change Control regulations were tight. In 1971, when our story begins, new "banks" on the fringe took advantage of the property boom, fuelled by Tory Chancellor Barber's first Budget. The discount houses (whose functions and special privileges at the Bank were soon arcane) became active traders in US dollar and foreign currency paper, and took stakes in the new money brokers (or "barrow boys," as the snobs called them, since the sharpest brokers were mainly Cockney Eastenders). While the "gentleman's club" was quickly being replaced by the fast growing "interbank swaps" market (now LIFFE), the discount houses had found a new role to pla- opening representative offices overseas (Gillett Brothers, where I was then chairman, in Southern Africa, UAE, Australia and Singapore, with brokering subsidiaries in Europe, Far East, and North America) - gathering market intelligence around the world, as the invisible "eyes and ears" of the Bank of England.

INDISPENSABLE FOR UNDERSTANDING AMERICAN POLITICS!
By Alfredo R. Villanueva
My God. To think I bought it at a second hand bookshop 25 years ago! And I have just used it in my writing of a prologue to an antology on Penelope (and Oddysseus). But upon rereading it, I have sudddenly realized how totally relevant the concept of cunning intelligence, as opposed to logical intelligence, is today for the understanding of the development of American poltics and economics, ruled as they are by the octopus and the fox, which embody metis (the term under discussion) in the animal kingdom. Anyone with a good knowledge of Greek myth can follow Detienne and Vernant's erudite discussion of the components of METIS in Green culture and society. But the crucial thing is that their words apply to our own culture and society. We pretend to be ruled by Logos, but we are not!

The Japanese Tattoo, by Sandi Fellman

A crimson fish wrestles a man. A horned demon stares menacingly. These vivid scenes are tattoos, created in pain, incised in the flesh of the Yakuza, Japan's feared secret society of gangsters. They are the visions of the Irezumi, the legendary tattoo artists, who spend years creating living masterpieces. Photographer Sandi Fellman describes this strange and violent world both in her text and in her stunning, large Polaroid photographs.

From Library Journal
American photographer Sandi Fellman used a rare large size Polaroid camera to create these photos of Irezumi Japanese men and women who wear elaborate full-body tattoos. Fellman treats the tattoos as artworks and their creators as artists. Review
"American photographer Sandi Fellman used a rare large size Polaroid camera to create these photos of Irezumi Japanese men and women who wear elaborate full-body tattoos. Fellman treats the tattoos as artworks and their creators as artists. Her text touches on the tattooing process, common motifs, the sociology of the tattoo, and relationships between the tattoo masters and their clients. Author D.M. Thomas has contributed two pages of his reactions to these unusual and even disturbing images. Misinformed, horrible quality, grossly padded.
By K.S.
This book is laughably bad. Firstly, trust me on the reviews about the quality of the photos. It looks like the book is filled with images from Google blown up to way beyond their resolution capabilities. They are fuzzy and unclear. Furthermore you'll have these giant pages just of a single photo (in horrible quality) and on the other side a stark white page with maybe two sentences of text taking up not even 1/16 of the page and rest going unused. I'm all for white pages in photo books, but this is every single page. This is beyond padding. I collect Japanese tattoo magazines (Tribal Tattoo is my favorite publication, and I highly recommend their magazines) and Japanese tattoo photobooks..the magazines have better quality and better information than this. There is a passage in this book that states "it MIGHT symbolize.." so they don't even know what they are actually discussing in this book. I honestly think someone just rounded up a few people, took some pictures on their phone, and then looked at the wikipedia page and wrote a book. I am sincerely upset I spent ANYTHING on this. I honestly have to wonder how this got published at all. This is not even worth the used book price. Save your money, there are FAR better options on the market. Many retailers on the Amazon JP website too will ship to the US and you can get official magazines far better than this book for the same price.
I uploaded two photos to accompany this review so you can see what I mean about the poor photo quality and the extreme padding within this book.

Great research!
By p christopher lurie
I own a tattoo studio, and I've used this book countless times to explain elements of Japanese tattoos to my clients. I can't tell how many times I've said "wind bars...like these in this picture" or "these are peony flowers and these are lotus" or "look at this little hairy penis". The photos are large and varied. And while they aren't frame worthy, they do help for research purposes. Dragons, samurai, koi, pubic hair, flowers, penises, ISO-bars, wind bars, foreskin, finger waves, etc. This is a great purchase!

(4 stars because I have to cover all the penises with my thumb when I show it to less mature clients ::giggle::)

Great Photos, Weak Text
By Keith Fung
If you have no experience with horimono, this book gives some excellent images focusing mostly on the works of three masters (only one, Horiyoshi III Sensei of Yokohama still actively tattoos). The book is worth buying for the images alone.

And I wish it were the images alone. The captions are often naive, bordering at times on offensive. The author at best over-exotifies and at worse verges on ridiculing some of her subjects, and seems to know very little about the tradition, history, and mores of Japanese society and horimono. Add to that an introduction that is almost unexplainably ludicrous (by an author with no bio!) and you have a book that's great to look at, just not to read. I'd give it 5 stars if it was just the photos.

Read Takahiro Kitamura's books as well as Donald Richie's for better information.

Misleading book title
By Khairul I. Sufandi
The book's title and editorial review is very misleading. I was expecting a book that will teach me how to do my own modifications on my sub, such as intake, exhaust..etc.. Instead, all this book touches on is what you can or should buy. It describes all the diff type of air intake kit, diff type of turbos, diff type of exhaust and diff type of ecu etc... All the info you can easily get off the internet for free.. Haiz, very dissappointed in this book. The book title should be, buyers guide to aftermarket subaru parts, not builders guide!

It was OK
By Martine B. Wedlake
When I read through the book, I wasn't overly impressed. It kinda reads like a product catalogue with lots of parts identified but lacking depth. But, now that I've had the book for a while, it's kinda grown on me. When I go looking for the next area to improve (coilovers, brakes, etc.), I tend to go reaching for this book. That's worth something...

Not for experienced enthusiasts
By Peter Babb
This is a very nice book if you don't know much about cars. If, like me, you were hoping for a more in-depth type of content from that offered in Subiesport magazine, don't bother. I learned absolutely nothing that I didn't know before. For me it's pretty much useless, but I do want to emphasize that the author has good intentions and that it is a well crafted book. I used to love this kind of book when I was 12.
