Morphine, Murder, & Money

Dr. Lord loves Elinor, who loves Roderick, who loves Mary. Aunt Laura Wellman loves them all. They all appear to love Aunt Laura's money. When Aunt Laura dies intestate, the question of who inherits seems simple indeed. The characters occasionally appear shallow, but they can also display depth of character. Elinor (who got Aunt Laura's estate) could be very likeable if she didn't hate Mary so. Despite her hatred, Elinor honors Aunt Laura's dying wish and settles a tidy sum on Mary. Mary behaves nobly throughout. Roderick acts like a dunce throughout, but is capable of occasional sparks of nobility. Dr. Lord stands on the sidelines and makes moon eyes at Elinor. Is this a murder mystery or a soap opera? Where is Hercule Poirot? Doesn't the cover say this is a Poirot mystery? That's the only reason I bought the radio play. I'm at the end of tape one, and no Poirot in sight.
Mary dies and an autopsy reveals poisoning by morphine. Aunt Laura is exhumed and found to have died from morphine poisoning also. Elinor, who has motive and opportunity in spades for both deaths also appears to have the means. Finally Dr. Lord shakes off his inactivity and calls in Hercule Poirot to save the woman he loves.
Poirot engages in the usual snooping and deduction, catches everyone lying, reveals all the dark secrets, and guides Elinor's barrister in the defense of the case. He also figures out whodunnit. At least he amasses enough evidence to . . . but I don't want to give away the story. I'd hate to destroy your enjoyment when you figure it out for yourself.
When the time comes for Mary to die, you will have grown to like her so much that you will truly regret her killing. You will also share Dr. Lord's forlorn faith in Elinor's innocence. This novel has a much smaller cast of suspects than most Poirot novels, but the murderer's identity should remain opaque at least until the commencement of Elinor's trial.
The BBC radio play is very well done, as are all the BBC plays of Christie's Poirot stories, but the cover gives too great a hint as to the murderer's identity. Luckily, I pay more attention to the writing on the back of a book cover than I do to the picture on the front. I thus noticed the cover's significance only after I finished the play.

Absolutely loved this audio

Sad Cypress Come Away, come away, death, And in sad cypress let me be laid; Fly away, fly away, breath; I am slain by a fair cruel maid.
The words above are sung on the tape, giving it an eerie old fashion feel. It also had an actor for each part, along with sound effects.
It begins with Elinor and Roddy receiving an anonymous letter telling them another person has moved in on their aunt's affections and they could lose their inheritance if they don't come visit soon. First auntie comes up dead while they are visiting. And later another person is murdered when Elinor comes to visit a second time. Elinor is charged with murder. And Hercule Poirt is hired to find out the truth. With a little investigating and even some courtroom drama, Hercule solves the case of whodunit. I have always enjoyed how Poirt explains the solved mystery at the end. It has helped me as a reader to pay more attention when reading a mystery.
The BBC is known for their ability to produce a good audio mystery. I would recommend any you should come across as entertaining. They can break the monotony of those long walks or drives.

Books on Tape and Walkmans

Love the audio tape of "Sad Cypress". I can not find exactly the same BBC cast on CDs or Audible so I was very happy to find the audio tape, again. I first discovered "Sad Cypress" in the early 1990s. I was working in a large warehouse with many others and processing a lot of paper work, pretty mindless but it was good money. So since Walkmans were allowed I began stopping by a Books on Tape establishment off of Preston Road and found this and so many more really great books on tape. This started a trend and several of us participated in swapping tapes at work which made the situation more enjoyable.
One of the very best books on tape was "A Time to Kill" - if only the movie had been as good as that one man book on tape performance!

About the Author

Hugh J. Foley received his B.A. from St. John Fisher College and his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has taught at small liberal arts institutions throughout his academic career. He is currently a full professor at Skidmore College, where he has directed the Neuroscience Program and served as Mellon Fellow for First-Year Students. Hugh has taught the perception course throughout his career, as well as statistics and methodology courses. He has published articles in methodology, cognition, and perception–typically with his research collaborator, Mary Ann Foley. They have also received several grants from the National Science Foundation. Hugh has worked with Margaret Matlin on the previous two editions of Sensation and Perception.

The Appearance of a Good Textbook

Hugh Foley and Margaret Matlin have written a solid undergraduate Sensation and Perception text. It covers the expected material and the 5th edition has been updated with the latest research. A reasonable subset of it, anyway.

An introductory chapter outlines the primary schools of thought in psychology and their approach to sensation and perception. The second chapter on research methods presents psychophysics, signal detection theory and methods of recording brain activity. The following six chapters explore the visual system in depth, dividing the content into chapters introducing the visual system and its basic functions, followed by visual pattern perception, distance and size perception, color and motion. The next three chapters cover the auditory system, its basic functions, and auditory pattern perception. There is single-chapter coverage of the skin senses and the chemical senses (taste and smell), followed by a closing chapter on perceptual development. The greater emphasis of vision and hearing is consistent with both the quantity of available research and their greater importance to human perception.

The book has the customary set of instructional features, including bolded keywords and a glossary. It is well-referenced with current research, including an extensive reference section and a helpful author index. The content is well-written for the undergraduate level. Learning is supported by end-of-chapter summaries and end-of-chapter review questions. The text is peppered with links to an above average supporting web site. The online demonstrations are engaging--students enjoy sharing many of them with family and friends.

The instructor web site is carefully guarded by the publisher who, after much checking of an instructor's university affiliation, will serve up a password. The contents are disappointing, excepting a downloadable .pdf file of test questions. It is uncertain whether the publisher's security admonitions keep all instructors from releasing it to their students.

CAUTION: The publisher is willing to create "custom editions" using subsets of the chapters for different universities. This results in a cheaper paperback text that looks like a study guide for the hardback. This can be confusing to students, who sometimes buy the wrong book.

It's a good textbook. Instructors, consider adopting it; students, have confidence in it--and be sure to get the right edition.

I have a cut-down version of this text for a uni class on human information processing. I really hate this book!!

It is really hard to read, over technical and just drones on with key words.

The companion website is the singularly worst student/instructor companion website I have ever had the displeasure to use.

Too technical

I chose this rating because the book is cram packed with information. Each chapter has a huge list of terms. There is so much information included that it is difficult to study from and understand it all for a non-science major, and I am NOT a science person!

Nikki Maxwell is feeling pretty good about life for a change. She got to dance with her “crush” Brandon at the Halloween dance ,and he does not seem to mind that she is a “dork.” Then, as per usual, things start to fall apart rather rapidly. It all begins when Nikki is forced to babysit her little sister Brianna. Brianna bamboozles Nikki into taking her to Queasy Cheesy for a pizza and to Nikki’s horror, the sisters are chosen to perform the Queasy Cheesy theme song. How embarrassing! Nikki has no choice but to get on the stage and get on with it. She is actually having a not-too-terrible time when she sees that her arch enemy. MacKenzie. is recording the whole performance on her cell phone.

Nikki lives in fear that MacKenzie is going to show everyone in school the video, but when nothing comes of it, Nikki starts to relax. Which is not a good idea. MacKenzie’s next move it to threaten to tell everyone that Nikki’s father is an exterminator and that Nikki is a scholarship kid. If Nikki wants her secret to stay a secret, she mustn’t participate in the school talent show.

Miserably Nikki tells her two best friends that she cannot be in the talent show with them. Nikki cannot bear to tell her BFFs what MacKenzie is up to, nor does she tell them about her dad and the scholarship. It is just too embarrassing.

As if this is not bad enough, there is a strange insect infestation in the school. Nikki is terrified that the principal will call in her father, the school’s contracted exterminator, and then everyone will know what her father does for a living. Everyone will see his beat up van with the enormous fake roach on the roof.

In this third Dork Diaries title, poor Nikki Maxwell gets into several sticky situations, and she discovers that it really does not pay to keep secrets from your friends. She comes to realize that it important to embrace who you are, even if you are a dork.

Written in a delightful journal format complete with a handwritten text and doodles, this is the third title in the Dork Diaries series.

Rachel Renee Russell is an attorney who prefers writing tween books to legal briefs. (Mainly because books are�a lot more fun and pajamas and bunny slippers aren't allowed in court.)

She has raised two daughters and lived to tell about it. Her hobbies include growing purple flowers and doing dotally useless crafts (like, for example, making a microwave oven out of Popsicle sticks, glue, and glitter). Rachel lives in northern Virginia with a spoiled pet Yorkie who terrorizes her daily by climbing on top of a computer cabinet and pelting her with stuffed animals while she writes. And, yes, Rachel considers herself a total Dork.

AWESOME BOOK!

I started reading Dork Diaries a while ago and I was so excited for Book 3 to come out. It was fantastic and I could not put it down for one second! It was funny,
like all of the others, and the author has done it again. She was able to make
the perfect book. Nikki, the main character, was also great in this book and
her diary entries also came along with funny, awesome drawings that were as
fantastic as books 1 and 2. In this book Nikki enters a talent show, but MacKenzie
Hollister has also entered it and Nikki will have to give it her hardest to win.
Can she? Find out in this 3rd companion to the Dork Diaries!

I totally love this series!!!! Last year, I got the first book at a bookstore. I read it and it was so funny!!!! Ha ha~~~~~And this year I heard it had the sequel. So I got it on Kindle. And it was fun too!!!! And I heard it had a third book too, So I downloaded it from Kindle. I loved it~So good!!!! I like Nikki in the book. Why? Because she's the main character! And she's nice, Not bad like Mackenzie. That's why the book is so funny. And even her friends are dorks!!! And she is so lucky because she sits next to her crush in biology class. I think she is a dork because her family are dorks. Yahoo!!! I love it!!!

These how-to volumes, written by two skilled and prominent practitioners of Japanese karate, cover 13 Shotokan kata (formal sequences of karate techniques). Each begins with a brief text explaining how to practice the kata, then follows with sections of photos showing, step by step, how to perform them. Useful information is included on how to prepare physically and mentally for karate. The introductory sections are readable, but the fact that the photos are not accompanied by text at times makes the kata sequences difficult to follow. Recommended only for those librarians building exhaustive martial arts collections.

A lavishly illustration of Shotokan kata & bunkai

All the Shotokan katas are covered in step by step detail with possible bunkai (Application). Vince Morris along with Aidan Trimble ex-SKI World Champion demonstrate all the moves of the kata and how these moves can be used in real combat. A unique insight into the system and how kata relates to kumite.

An excellent basic karate kata text when used in conjuction with training under a Shotokan Karate instructor.

There are probably more books published on karate and kata than on any other martial art system and I have had the opportunity to read and review most of them. This Crescent edition book was published in 1995, but the kata and applications are still valid and relevant for those practicing karate in 2012. In fact, this book is organized in a way that anyone studying karate from a competent Shotokan Karate instructor should be able to easily follow the kata movements in this text.

This book covers the following kata: Heian Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan and Godan. It also demonstrates Tekki Shodan, Bassai-Dai, Kanku-Dai, Empi, Sochin, Jion, Hangetsu and Nijushiho. It should also be mentioned that these are NOT the only katas practiced in the Shotokan Karate system. In the JKA curriculum there are 26 kata but some other Shotokan systems practice 31 katas.

One of the many things I like about this book is how each step of the kata is photographed, making it easy to follow the movements. The sequences are shown and the practical application or Bunkai is than illustrated for each kata. It is important to note that the bunkai of each kata shown in this text is not the only variation one could create within a kata. Indeed, the masters who created the original kata movements did not write down the meanings of their kata, thus, leaving it up to later instructors to figure out for themselves. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book to use as a supplemental guide when training under a Shotokan Karate instructor.

In conclusion, this book should be in the library of every serious karate student.

this a a good book for for any one who is self employed or is a 1099 employee

This is the 3rd book of Mike piper's that I have purchased and read. My wife and I have been self-employed for 20+ years. You would have thought by now that we would have known everything there was to know and this book would have had little to offer.

Not so. For us it helped to understand how all the parts fit together to create the bigger picture. For example, how self-employment taxes, exemption and deductions work. A nice how to on calculating self-employment tax.

Sort and concise and a great reference book. I especially liked the fact that he put information in the book w/ regard to the self-employed/individual 401 K and that you can get such a vehicle with a ROTH component. This is VERY important information becuase I think there are MANY 1099 or self employeed folks out there that do not even know such an investment option even exists.

A short, simple, easy-to-read introduction to taxes

As someone who knew literally nothing about taxes, this book was a great introduction.

By no means is this book going to make you an expert accountant.
It has one job: give the average layperson a simple overview of tax basics.
And it does that job well.

The brevity works to its advantage:
taxes are not exactly the sexiest subject in the world, so by keeping it short and sweet, it's able to hold your attention without boring you. I finished it in two sittings.

I'd definitely recommend this to a layperson interested in learning more about taxes.
And for that price, it can't be beat.

Very Recommended for its Clarity

A great overview that I have never seen anywhere else, even after doing my own taxes for 20 years. Nobody else ever told me that the cash accounting method is not actually what it is purported to be. I never saw the retirement saving methods compared so cleanly. My one request would be an online supplement that explains changes in the current tax year.

Read and repeat!

This is a very interesting read. I read it twice just to get all the information. It's not a long book, but there are a lot of names and organizations mentioned. Out of the twenty or so arcane societies mentioned, I had maybe heard of three or four.

Dr. Monteith did a great job of "following the money," showing how people with deep pockets and large spheres of influence can sway public opinion through the media, government, and other means. An example is the purchase of 25 major US newspapers prior to WWI by J.P. Morgan, in order to publish fake stories of German atrocities in Belgium.

This book made me want to look deeper into the lives of "great" Americans such as John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and J.P. Morgan, among others. There is more to them than meets the eye, it seems.

This book is 15 years old as of this review but Dr. Monteith spent most of his life assimilating the information presented here, with citations for every source. I still highly recommend it, as it's an eye-opener into the "arcanum arcanorum," the people working behind the curtains, and who is behind it all. Read it, and loan it to your friends for them to read it. This is fact, but sometimes reads like fiction. This is the world we live in. Just remember Who will win in the end.

One last note: I purchased the Kindle version, which has many formatting errors such as varying margins and pages mostly void of text in the middle of a chapter. The book is still there in its entirety and is quite readable, but if you're distracted by this sort of thing, you might be better off buying the physical copy.

THEY LIVE!

This contains some excellent information for people who don't know about the history of secret societies and who belonged to them! Believe me there are quite a few of them. In fact, it is these societies who gave birth to the term conspiracy, but today the clever evil ones have tried to 'assassinate' the word conspiracy itself by associating the demonizing label of conspiracy 'theorist' to anyone who tries to get others do delve into real conspiracies that conspiracy INVESTIGATORS have uncovered. There is nothing new about dark brotherhoods and Dr. Monteith covers quite a spectrum of players and their places in history, as well as just how much influence they have had in war, peace, revolution and social control. There is a bit too much repetition and redundancy in the writing but if you want to understand what is going on today under the surface of what you see and hear in their wholly owned media it's worth plowing through! You may find some of it disturbing to your everyday paradigms, but that's the idea isn't' it? To shake you with the truth and let you sort it out. There are some real surprises when you find out how some of the new forms government succeeded in their quest to rise and just who funded, aided and abetted them. You'll also find out that so-called 'philanthropists' and foundations are not always used to help humanity in general, but rather to further the aims of those with dark plans and powers! The money channeled through these front foundations is a big part of that dark power! Most of what is really happening is 'dark' to the general public BY THE DESIGNS of the dark brotherhood, hence the term conspiracy! Read this to further your understanding of how our world is shaped to work by them not us! The good news is the we can change it, and we do that with our personal efforts and an understanding of the evil that must be overcome!

Darkness casts a shadow over taught history

Dr. Monteith's book was written to serve as an overview and an introduction to secret societies with a diabolical root and a subversive purpose. He takes on quite a few that range from financial organizations (Bank for International Settlements, The Trilateral Commission, et al) to international organizations (Council on Foreign Relations, The United Nations) to the socio-political (The Bilderbergers, The Club of Rome, The Illuminati, et al) and finally, to the religious (The Adepts of the Mystery Religions, The Knight Templars, the Rosicurians, the Hermetic Masons, The Blue Star Society, et al). The author strings them together to explain some of history's major events and many subversive events. In the end, the reader wants more but it is a short book. If you are a fan of conspiracy or student of prophecy, you will enjoy this book. I do caution you that your perspective of known history will be challenged.
