About the Author
Friedrich Engels was born in 1820, in the German city of Barmen. He died in London in 1895 while editing the fourth volume of Capital.

Karl Marx studied law and philosophy at the universities of Bonn and Berlin, completing his doctorate in 1841. Expelled from Prussia in 1844, he took up residence first in Paris and then in London where, in 1867, he published his magnum opus Capital. A co-founder of the International Workingmen’s Association in 1864, Marx died in London in 1883.

Robert C. Tucker is professor of politics emeritus at Princeton University and past president of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies.

The most exhaustive compilation of Marx and Engels' work

This tome is massive. I needed it for a graduate level class on classical sociological theory. It can be confusing at times because translations from German to English are difficult, but this is still an excellent read to get the full range of Marx's ideas in his own words. There is also a lot from Engels but most of it is Marx.

It is so different from hat I read before - reading it gives you a feeling as if you talking to a friend or a person who knows you very well, sometimes better than I know myself because it opens the questions I never tried to look for answers within myself. It reads so smoothly, I read it in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. It helped not only me, I shared it with my friends, and family. Jazz is more than just singing it!

From the very first page of this book, I knew this was what I was looking for. I teach jazz vocal styles at a university. It is sometimes a challenge trying to express to new students the importance of how to be expressive in singing jazz. This book breaks it down in revealing the many expressions, such as interpreting if the lyrcis are informative, poetic, etc. This book is for the serious jazz vocalist that really would like to learn how to sing, how to express the lyrics, how to become one with the song and how to draw an audience into a world of unforgettable and intimate singing.

SOPHOCLES:The most popular tragedian of the Golden Age, he expanded the scope of classic drama by his technical innovations and lyric intensity, leaving the world such masterpieces as ANTIGONE and OEDIPUS THE KING, the play Aristotle called the perfect model of Greek tragedy.

EURIPIDES: A prolific author, Euripides wrote some one hundred plays. In contrast to his contemporaries, he brought an exciting-and, to the Greeks, a stunning-realism to the "pure and noble" form of tragedy. His influence altered drama forever, and he is regarded today as the originator of modern dramatic sensibility.

ARISTOPHANES:The most famous comic playwright of ancient Greece, he wrote what are now the only extant representative of Greek Old Comedy. His three outstanding characteristics-gross obscenity, exquisite lyricism, and a serious concern for decency and morality-may seem a strange combination to the modern reader. Aristophanes is still regarded by modern audiences as a master of risqu� wit and brilliant comic invention.

Editor Moses Hadas was a world-renowned scholar, and his notes can be helpful, but the translations he presented in this volume have become outdated. Most Greek translations sacrifice something through the morality, prudence, or artistic judgment of the translator. This is a fine text for the value, but if clarity is more important to you, seek a more recent translation.
