Review
"This text is irreplaceable and has stood the test of time. It is a godsend for my remote sensing classes; students are guided by the book's logical structure, authoritative writing, liberal use of examples, and clear illustrations. The fifth edition offers an excellent opportunity to brush up on the rapidly changing face of remote sensing, as underlined by a separate chapter on change detection."--Victor Mesev, Department of Geography, Florida State University

"Introduction to Remote Sensing deserves its excellent reputation as one of the preeminent textbooks for undergraduate courses in remote sensing and image processing. It has proven very economical for my students as I can use it in complementary courses on introductory remote sensing and image processing. Like prior editions, the fifth edition provides students with critical information on how to design and conduct a remote sensing project, including acquisition of field data. Comprehensive and up to date, this is an essential text for our dynamic discipline."--Paul Treitz, Department of Geography, Queen’s University, Canada

"The fifth edition of this outstanding text maintains the high standards that faculty and students have enjoyed in previous editions. It provides one of the best-organized, most accessible treatments available. The inclusion of extensive references and, especially, additional learning resources easily enables instructors to explore topics in more depth as desired. I am particularly impressed with how Campbell and Wynne have admirably met the challenge of keeping the text up to date with respect to new analytical methods, always a challenge in this ever-changing field. The full section on change detection is another welcome addition."--Rick L. Lawrence, Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, Montana State University

"Introduction to Remote Sensing is the cornerstone of the reading list for my undergraduate environmental remote sensing course. The book is structured to have a clear and logical progression that guides students into the subject and builds a comprehensive knowledge base. Each chapter is highly informative, providing information that is easy to digest and fully contextualized with relevant examples and suitable illustrations. The revised questions at the end of each chapter provide an excellent opportunity for reflective learning. Overall, this book is an essential read for my students which has proven over the years to stand them in good stead."--Ross Hill, School of Applied Sciences, Bournemouth University, United Kingdom

"This well-established introductory textbook covers all aspects of classical remote sensing, from basic physics and image acquisition to analytic techniques and applications in a wide range of areas. Given the continued rapid development of remote sensing--for example, the increased use of satellite imagery, digital cameras, and Lidar--the publication of the fifth edition is timely. As a teacher, I find the list of relevant Web addresses after most chapters to be especially valuable."--Hkan Olsson, Department of Forest Research Management, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

"The text provides comprehensive coverage of principal topics and serves as a framework for organizing the vast amount of remote sensing information available on the web. Featuring case studies and review questions, the book's 21 chapters are carefully designed as independent units that instructors can select from as needed for their courses." (Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin 2011-12-03)

"An outstanding guide to the student as well as the experienced user of remotely sensed data. The book provides a clear overview and context for further study. The transition from analog to digital is explained extremely well without leaving out the fundamentals required to have a complete understanding. New topics including object-based image analysis are included. This book is an excellent text for an introductory remote sensing course. It is also an appropriate addition to anyone's library who is trying hard to keep up with all the changes in the remote sensing technology. This book has a valued place on my bookshelf." (Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing 2012-06-01)

Comprehensive and readable
By Robert C.
Organization and writing style of this text are both excellent. Campbell's explanations of technical details are understandable and complete. Readers should know this is an "all about" book and not a "how to" book with a limited discussion of software used in remote sensing applications.

Uprooted from his privileged European life and sent to New Zealand to sort himself out, 21-year-old Daniel pieces together the history of his Maori family. As his relatives revisit their past, Daniel learns of a remarkable love story between his Maori grandmother Oriwia and his Japanese grandfather Chappy. The more Daniel hears about his deceased grandfather, the more intriguing and elusive Chappy becomes. In this touching portrayal of family life, acclaimed writer Patricia Grace explores racial intolerance, cross-cultural conflicts and the universal desire to belong. Spanning several decades and several continents and set against the backdrop of a changing New Zealand, Chappy is a compelling story of enduring love.

Classic NZ author produces another stunner
By Kiwiflora
You know when you start reading a Patricia Grace book that you are in the hands of a master. From the first words, there is just this wonderful sense of being enveloped and absorbed in what you are reading. Not only because she is such a New Zealand writer, so deeply in tune with her roots, the land and the people, but because she writes from the heart, achingly so of people and their relationships with each other. It is a wonderful experience to read her.

This is such a modern New Zealand story, about family, the land, the search for identity and belonging, the strong tug and pull for home that any NZer who has lived elsewhere knows and feels deep inside. 21 year old Daniel does not know this longing, as he has spent all his life living outside NZ with his expat parents. He has come to live for a time with his grandmother Oriwia in her small New Zealand town. Her family, like most Maori, is deeply entrenched in the local area, close links to each other and to the land. Her brother Aki, also elderly, lives nearby and between the two of them, Daniel learns his own roots, where he has come from, and the strange story of his grandfather Chappy. In his younger days, Aki was a seaman, and one voyage found himself as an unwitting accomplice in the smuggling of Chappy, a Japanese stowaway fleeing from the Japanese invasion of China in the early 1930s, into New Zealand. Given the name Chappy by Aki, not knowing a word of English let alone Maori, he is embraced by the small rural Maori community he finds himself in. Marrying, having children, working, contributing his skills to the wealth of his family, Chappy ends up having a very fortunate life, although it has its challenges along the way - WWII and internment; the colder climate and the health issues he came to NZ with; his guilt at leaving his family in Japan. Moving between NZ and Hawaii, across three generations of family, Daniel hears the story of Oriwia, Aki and Chappy, and in turn himself. Such a good story, such a treat to read such great writing.

A priceless resource that tells much of who we are
By JET
A beautiful book, and an important book, that keenly observes the lives of marginalised Maori in 20th century New Zealand.
Patricia Grace tells an intriguing story of how four cultures blended and inter-acted, forming a family of extraordinary blended talents and love.
The main cultures are Maori, Japanese and Hawaiian, all of whom were forced in different ways to adapt to European influences that threatened to engulf them.
They refused to be engulfed, instead adapting in such resilient and ingenious ways that their cultural wellsprings were strengthened rather than diminished.
There is a lot to be learned from this book, precious information that records ways of living that are simply unknown and probably unknowable to most mainstream New Zealanders.
Grace uses sophisticated story-telling constructs so cleverly they seem natural, unobtrusive to the main objective, which is to place in our history a perspective that could have been too easily lost.
A gem of a book, a priceless book. A must-read for every New Zealander who has any curiosity at all about how we got to where we are.

A unique resource for all those interested in the impact of worms on livestock, the anthelmintics used to get rid of them and the emerging problem of anthelmintic resistance. This book provides an over-arching view of past, present and suggested future strategies for control of gastrointestinal nematode parasites in sheep and cattle.

The book begins with descriptions of the biology of gastrointestinal nematodes, the harm they cause to the host and their economic impact. The main body of the book deals with the control of worms, focusing on the use of anthelmintic drenches. The relationship between drenching practices and the development of drug resistance is discussed, as well as resistance management. The authors also break new ground by discussing alternative options for worm control, including: nutritional interventions, biological control, breeding for desirable genetics and artificially improving immunity to infection. They also offer useful recommendations for program development.

Review
"This very readable book is a refreshing change from most books on parasitology. The authors provide a wonderful review of current research efforts and present it in a way to provide readers with useable information. They also delve into more futuristic ideas on parasite control by vaccination as well as genetic resistance and nutritional interactions." (Doody's, 23 September 2011)

"This is definitely a book for anyone who wants to know a lot of detail about gastrointestinal parasites of sheep and cattle, but not for those after a quick and definitive guide to solving common problems encountered in veterinary practice." (The Australian Veterinary Journal, January/February 2011)

Review
Both informative and thought provoking... required reading for all students, scientists and veterinarians interested in parasitic disease and livestock production.

Black Athena: The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization - Vol 1: The Fabrication of Ancient Greece, 1785-1985, by Martin Bernal

Could Greek philosophy be rooted in Egyptian thought? Is it possible that the Pythagorean theory was conceived on the shores of the Nile and the Euphrates rather than in ancient Greece? Could it be that Western civilization was born on the so-called Dark Continent? For almost two centuries, Western scholars have given little credence to the possibility of such scenarios.

In Black Athena, an audacious three-volume series that strikes at the heart of today's most heated culture wars, Martin Bernal challenges Eurocentric attitudes by calling into question two of the longest-established explanations for the origins of classical civilization. The Aryan Model, which is current today, claims that Greek culture arose as the result of the conquest from the north by Indo-European speakers, or "Aryans," of the native "pre-Hellenes." The Ancient Model, which was maintained in Classical Greece, held that the native population of Greece had initially been civilized by Egyptian and Phoenician colonists and that additional Near Eastern culture had been introduced to Greece by Greeks studying in Egypt and Southwest Asia. Moving beyond these prevailing models, Bernal proposes a Revised Ancient Model, which suggests that classical civilization in fact had deep roots in Afroasiatic cultures.

This long-awaited third and final volume of the series is concerned with the linguistic evidence that contradicts the Aryan Model of ancient Greece. Bernal shows how nearly 40 percent of the Greek vocabulary has been plausibly derived from two Afroasiatic languages-Ancient Egyptian and West Semitic. He also reveals how these derivations are not limited to matters of trade, but extended to the sophisticated language of politics, religion, and philosophy. This evidence, according to Bernal, confirms the fact that in Greece an Indo-European people was culturally dominated by speakers of Ancient Egyptian and West Semitic.

Provocative, passionate, and colossal in scope, this volume caps a thoughtful rewriting of history that has been stirring academic and political controversy since the publication of the first volume.

Unlike the generations of coaches that have gone before them, today's coaches are expected not only to teach motor skills to young athletes but to do so in an environment that is conducive to the ethical, emotional, social and physical well-being of each one of them. Each of the 15 chapters of this book presents, and then systematically debunks, the most pervasive, persistent and potentially harmful myths in coaching, including such chestnuts as "play by my rules," "winning is the ultimate goal" and "there's no I in 'team.'" Although the information in every chapter is based on current scientific evidence (and there are numerous source notes), each is written in the everyday language of coaches and covers topics that are of particular interest to coaches, parents, athletic administrators, recreation programming specialists--and even the occasional fan.

A Must Read for parents & coaches
By MBG
This book is a Must Read if your child or teen is engaged in, or exploring participation in any sport. It is a tremendously helpful guide to the kind of coaching your child should receive, and the skills and maturity level you and the coaches might expect at any given age of the child. The chapter on hazing is especially frightening. Coaching Myths should also be required reading for every coach, whether a professional or volunteer.
It reads almost like a novel, is difficult to put down once started, and is an excellent investment in a young person's safety & enjoyment of sports!
