Confront yourself.

Life's funny. A dear friend asked me to stop at a Catholic book store. I figured walking around a bunch of crosses and pictures of Mary would be interesting. And here I am, in effect, passing judgement on the bookstore. It's almost inevitable. We are human. And we judge. This book isn't for those who are comfortable with their current system of beliefs. To confront one's own thinking is a frightening experience. Yet it's so liberating. This book is an easy read, and drives home a good point; seek to understand yourself.
Judging.
We do it on so many levels. We judge ourselves, others, and everything in our life. To step outside our own narrow world, and truly see the world for what it is...it's amazing.

Examine yourself first

I'm Judgmental, You're Judgmental is a book so well written and so full of "jewels" that you can examine yourself without getting defensive. I also found another book by Terry Cooper, "Making Judgments without being Judgmental" an excellent book. Reading those two books and my Bible were valuable in maintaining my marriage and restoring my daughter's marriage.
I bought a copy for my Pastor.

Fearing an attack, the Army took up strategic positions-and one of them was the Disney Studio.

DO NOT buy this otherwise excellent Disney WWII art book because it has NO illustrations!

This is a very informative paperback and I would have enjoyed seeing the thousands of illustrations so vividly described, but not pictured. The absolute MAJOR disappointment is the book is NOT illustrated and the website that would have shown the Disney archive illustrations is not available! Reading the history of the WW II art treasures without experiencing them is like going to a Disney Pixar movie wearing a pair of eye patches.

Service with Character

I'm a pretty sure that David Lesjak wrote Service with Character: The Disney Studio
& World War II for me. My Master's degree focused on World War II history. And when I crash my way through Disney books it is often this era my mind wanders towards. So I am pretty sure that Lesjak wrote this title mostly so I can finally have my curious questions answered.

David Lesjak in Service with Character: The Disney Studio & World War II details the efforts of the Walt Disney Studio in supporting the American, and Allied, war effort. He provides detailed chapters on the home front, insignia creation, propaganda and training films and contributions to print media. Along with these chapters that provide a transactional history of the studio's efforts, Lesjak provides a detailed look at the development of the failed Gremlins live-action film and all its complications. As a companion to the chapters, the authors provides a detailed list of supporting artifacts that can be viewed online. And he reprints letters and messages of interest in a series of Appendixes.

Overall I was impressed with Service with Character as a solid historical monograph that has been well researched and written in a clear manner that even non history buffs could read. The topics did satisfy my interest on a number of topics, like insignia. I am pleased to now have this volume in my Between Library for easy reference. My only quibble is around the lists of supporting collectibles for viewing. I really wish that some of them could have been included as illustrations within the text. It would likely be cost prohibitive to print images of the numerous items listed. I am still old school reading print copies. And it is difficult to reference a website during my prime reading time. So, reading through the artifacts I was inspired to go look for some of these objects. At the time of this posting, the website supporting the book with the collectibles is not yet up.

The book really illuminated this period of Disney history for me. And the book makes it clear that the Walt Disney Studio was financially pressed during this era, and much of it was due to Walt Disney's own efforts. Disney legitimately supported the American war effort and his choices lead him to lose money during a time where his film markets were already dwindling. For example, the short film he made for the Treasury Department The New Spirit further limited his markets by providing a free Disney short to theaters. Therefore, they did not need to order the newest Disney short to bring in an audience. And it is remarkable reading the struggles Disney went through to get paid by the U.S. government while being accused of price gouging on a product that was actually cutting into Disney profits. And the story of Disney's insignia production, which was completed for free and always in demand, was a topic I have wanted to read about for awhile. As one reads through the chapter one can easily grow to admire the dedication of Henry "Hank" Porter who took the lead on this Disney morale initiative for the armed forces.

Service with Character is a must own for Walt Disney Studio history fans. The text does an excellent job outlining a key moment in studio history. Additionally, World War II history enthusiasts will also enjoy this book, since it shows one company's war efforts. In many ways, Disney is one example of the many companies who's production was reoriented towards the war and struggled with diminishing profits and dwindling work forces.

For me, Service with Character has filled a key need in my Between Books library. I love the detailed accounts of film and insignia production found in the text. And I cannot help but admire the efforts of Walt Disney and his staff for keeping a studio open while finding their own avenues to support the war effort.

It’s one of those books that isn’t widely known today—it came and went at the time of its publication, reviewed well but never garnering widespread attention—but continues to be cited by other writers as groundbreaking (George Pelecanos wrote the glowing introduction to the 2001 reprint edition). It’s a post-Vietnam novel as much as it is crime fiction, much like Robert Stone’s Dog Soldiers (1974). Its dual protagonists are Richard Bone, once a middle-class midwestern ad man, now a dissolute California drifter, and Alex Cutter, a crippled vet with a serious grudge against the corporate world. Bone sees a man he thinks might be tycoon J. J. Wolfe stuffing something into a trash can. That something turns out to be a hooker, and at Cutter’s prodding, Bone and Cutter attempt to find out if it really was Wolfe who did the stuffing. We know from the start that nothing good can come of their investigation. Cutter would have us think that nailing this one rich guy would be a small symbolic step toward righting a world that went seriously wrong with Vietnam. Bone, like the reader, knows differently but can’t help following the scent. There is a peculiar kind of despair that sinks into the bone marrow of damaged war survivors—film noir was born out of that despair in the post-WWII era—and Thornburg nails the Vietnam version. The ending is pure Chinatown, with a dose of Easy Rider, and it leaves us reeling. --Bill Ott

Dead Souls

One of the best depictions of mid-'70s America I've come across, this powerful novel was written when the country was struggling to recover from the Vietnam War and remains as a vivid reminder of that time. Set mostly in Santa Barbara, the story follows two men firmly stuck in cycles of self-destruction. Bone dropped out of the corporate life and left his wife and kids in Minnesota to float around California as a gigolo, while Cutter came back from Vietnam minus an arm and a leg and teeters on the brink of insanity. Both are utterly disillusioned with the world around them and spend a great deal of time drinking and trying to blot out their rapidly suburbanizing, strip-mallifying, consumerist surroundings. The third member of this circle of dead souls is the sarcastic, Quaalude popping Mo, Cutter's live-in girlfriend and mother to his baby.
The whole book reads like one big hangover-the party (late '60s free love, rebellion, Vietnam, etc.) is over, and someone's gotta pay. One evening Bone unknowingly witnesses a murderer disposing of a victim, and what he half saw leads to a half-baked scheme to make some money. In another writer's hands, this could have lead to a comic caper, but Thornburg is intent on showing the county's loss of innocence through the bitter, maimed, and reckless Cutter, and his guilt-ridden and aimless buddy Bone. One problem I had with the story was the friendship between the two men. The book unfolds from Bone's perspective, and it's hard to fathom why he keeps returning to Cutter's side, other than guilt and/or a self-destructive streak.
In any event, the book starts fairly slow and there were a few times I considered ditching it. By the second half though, the lean prose gets more and more compelling, and the dilemmas get a bit more interesting. The final quarter or so takes the two men on a road trip from California to the Ozarks, in possible pursuit of the murderer. The climax is awfully gripping in a "y'all ain't from around here" Deliverance kind of way, and the final sentence packs a huge punch. ...Still, book's theme-that the Vietnam war did irreparable damage to the American psyche and values, and led to an America where money and consumption are king and justice is a mirage-emerges in full color, and the book remains an important picture of the empty '70s.
Note: This was made into a great dark film called Cutter's Way.

Read This One It's a Real Find!

The film is a neglected classic, and the novel it was inspired by is likewise. It will hook you as a good thriller does, yet also profoundly engage you with it's extraordinary mixture of the poetic and the grittily, absurdly real. The Characterisation is rich and broad and constantly surprising - tough yet warm - and it is stylistically muscular in a Chandleresque way, without ever becoming arch. Touching movingly on so many issues from some extremely archetypal relationships to the state of post-Vietnam America, Thornburg takes you on a rollercoaster ride that you won't want to get off. Finally, as an exploration of messed-up masculine insecurity it is devastating and compulsive with that rare thing in such books,great female characters! Read the book, see the film - you won't forget either.

Richard Bone is a handsome stud who uses women to his advantage. Alex Cutter is bitter Vietnam war vet: Crippled, relentlessly articulate, and seemingly always drunk, they make an unlikely friendship. That is until on day Bone witnesses a man dumping a dead body of a young woman; a man answering the description of a powerful business tycoon. So, pushed on by Cutter's vengeful maxims about the rich, they both decide to investigate in the hope of bringing the tycoon to book. But neither of them will ever guess the savage payoff. A powerful novel that deals with post-vietnam malaise and corporate power, this is highly recommended.

The best reference book of the bizarre you'll find

This book is epic. We're talking about 500+ pages, dictionary-style, of bizarre, abnormal, eccentric individuals from the ages. The author includes for categories for consideration: contrarians, theorists, visionaries, and entertainers. All of my favorites are here: visionaries with horrible personal quirks, like Tesla and his pigeons, or Howard Hughes and his jars of pee and hotel room bunkers; writers like Burroughs and artists like Warhol; the guy that built the coral castle down in Florida; and Hiroo Onoda, the Japanese soldier who was still operating command-style until 1974, unaware that WW2 had ended.

But what makes this book such a joy is that I could flip open to any random page and find someone I didn't even know existed, people who were janitors by day but wrote 11,000-page novels at night, only discovered after their death; people building castles and starting cults and living on a dollar a year even though they were millionaires and digging out massive underground gardens in Fresno that looked like Italian catacombs. As a kid, I practically memorized the Guinness book of world records, so I absolutely eat this stuff up.

This book is the ultimate bathroom reader, something to open to a random page for a quick entry or two, but it's also hugely entertaining to read from A to Z. Keep a copy of wikipedia handy and wander down the k-hole when you find a good entry, but be warned that this could make the book take a month to finish. Highly recommended.

Is it better to give than to receive? Does one good deed deserve another?
Just the other day I heard about a millionaire who gave at least a thousand dollars to waiters and waitresses as a tip. He said it was his way of serving the Lord one tip at a time!
I believe this delightful novel by Briar Kit Esme is a wonderful and creative example of generosity, doing the right thing at the right time, and passing on the blessings that have been given to us.
Yes, it is better to give than to receive and no good deed goes unnoticed!
This novel is lyrical and definitely something people can hum along with.
Is being rich a blessing or a curse? Is it genius or serendipity? Is it both?
My friends, there is a blessing in wisdom! Having the wisdom to give is something that can make you richer than you could ever imagine.
