Autism Interventions - Exploring the Spectrum of Autism, 2nd Ed. (2014) by authors Carolyn Murray-Slutsky and Betty Paris, is a great resource for anyone working with an individual with and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This 540 page book is a full of information on a variety of topics that are commonly encountered by anyone attempting to address the challenges in teaching someone with Autism: parents and families, therapists, teachers, behavioralists!
The book includes chapters by many of the leaders in research, education, behavioral intervention and treatment. Topics include recent changes in diagnosis and neurodevelopmental aspects of the disorder that can be addressed in order to alter the course across the lifespan, improve engagement and successful interactions. The focus of this invaluable tool is treatment and solutions to the most common issues encountered. Problems are identified and explained and treatment specifics covered in detail, replete with pictures to ensure that the reader knows what to look for and how to deal with it.
Chapters discuss research related to the high incidence of sensory integration issues encountered, describing each of the sensory issues in a clear and easy-to-understand format. Solutions are offered through intervention chapters directed at each of the different types of sensory issues: Sensory Modulation Disorder with Over Responsivity, Under Responsivity or Sensory Seeking or Craving; Sensory Discrimination Disorders; Difficulty with Praxis/ Motor Planning and Oral Motor and Feeding Issues that are sensory-based. Behaviors and characteristics of each problem are identified as well as step by step methods of directly addressing each of the difficulties encountered.
Another common issue in individuals with an ASD are motor control and coordination, which affect development of play skills, functional skills like self care and dressing, affects academic performance in the school-aged child and work performance in the older person. Specific and common difficulties are explained with pictures and intervention strategies outlined with how to develop skills using specific equipment. Nowhere else can you find this information! Behaviors discussed in depth are Obtaining and Avoiding Behaviors; Repetitive and Restrictive, Self Stimulation and other challenging behaviors. Success in dealing with unwanted and challenging behavior depends upon correct identification of the function of the behavior and knowing what to do about the behavior. This book does a great job of explaining behaviors: their cause(s), the expression of what underlies the behavior(s), and what to about them. The information is organized in practical, easy-to-implement, successful methods.
Speech and Language Pathologists have dedicated two chapters to improving communication, a core feature in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Assessment is outlined, but the focus on intervention so that the problems can be addressed and communication developed. The "How and Why" of augmentative alternatives are outlined for those struggling with language and communication difficulties.
Development of Social and play skills are also addressed. Early play and how it changes as the child typically matures into adolescence is explained with concrete suggestions for developing play and social interaction in individuals who have difficulty with these skills, no matter what their age or level of function in these areas.
Finally, in this holistic text is the topic of Academic success and skill development. Foundational needs, Hidden Curriculum, Theory of Mind and Problem Solving and Decision Making are covered. This chapter is loaded with practical, easy-to-implement strategies to make the learning easier and more enjoyable.
I can't tell you how informative this book is and how valuable the information is. You MUST see for yourself! I have found no other resource that outlines the issues and gives concrete and practical strategies to use in changing the skill level, performance and behavioral response of someone with an ASD.
