Good Historiographical Essays

This modest collection of essays embodies the kind of work I love most: a master historian writing about the questions that interest him.

"The Irrepressible Conflict" stood out as the most convincing and thorough argument. Its subject is the inevitability of the Civil War and whether the North could have ended slavery through patience. Stampp dismantles the idea with aplomb.

"The Southern Road to Appomattox" promotes the idea that a lack of will killed the confederacy. Stampp places too much emphasis on guilt, but the idea of a lack of will was useful for other works, notably "Why the South Lost the Civil War".

The other essays are a mix of historiography and analysis of such questions as Lincoln's motivation in resupplying Fort Sumter, the use and misuse of psychology in assessing slaves, and the meaning of racism in the Republican Party.

It's quite an achievement that this information-filled guide to brain functioning sounds so casual and breezy. Credit Marc Cashman's performance. He's so consistent and professional, so in tune with the author's thinking that most listeners will simply devour the wealth of information and not even think about the talent of the messenger. Cashman is a reasonably positive interpreter, an improvement over the author's overenthusiasm when he lectures or reads. The material explains what parts of the brain cause familiar behaviors, and the complexity of this kind of science is kept grounded with engaging case histories. The resulting mix, along with Cashman's appealing voice, interpretive talent, and restraint, makes this a credible audio lesson that remains engaging for the entire 12-plus hours. Amen to Dr. Amen

Your brain - is you. Yet in some very real ways it is the most overlooked and taken for granted of all of our body parts. If dysfunction is suspected or actually manifested in criminal, antisocial or self-destructive behaviors, you could find yourself in "treatment," jail or locked into a life of private pain and misery. Treatment generally means drugs to quell any obnoxious or dangerous behaviors. "Take 2 or 20 and call me in the morning if you can find the phone." How is it, Amen asks, that the brain - the most important organ in the human body - is so routinely ignored? Medical practitioners would not think of treating any other body parts in such a cavalier manner. If you have a blockage or breakage or suspected neoplasm, it is straight to the diagnostic machines for you to poke, prod and scan all the parts in question and deliver images where the doctors can not see. Dr. Amen and his clinical staff LOOK at real brains in action and in trouble with scanning technology that should be routine practice in every mental health clinic in the country. After some 50,000 such scans Amen knows his stuff - what the human brain looks like in health and sickness. Yes you can see such things. His conclusion is that nearly all of us could use a little (or a lot) of help! This book shows the way like no other I have ever seen. Not with drugs first but using natural substances and techniques to balance and heal brains hobbled by abuse, injury and neglect. Better brains, better lives, better world! You will not regret reading this book. It is for all who want to be the best they can be. Bravo Dr. Amen! Great Book..THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES OVER!!!!

I just purchased this book and have read it over and over. I now use it as a reference tool to make sure I continue to stay on track. I had alot of things going on with me from drinking to anxiety to add to depression. I felt very hopeless and confused and most of all, just plain all over the place. Now that i understand the root of my actions and why i do the things that i was doing, i was able to take control and make the necessary changes. I have begun taking some of the natural remedies in the book including exercising and staying away from the alcohol. I have noticed a great change in myself and others have also complimented me on the change. Thanks so much for this book and for helping me get back to who i use to be long time ago. I will say please read and see for yourself but stay focus and do what the book says. thanks..
