Nonfiction not Hollywood
By Keats
The negative reviews for this book seem to come from people looking for the movie version of The Exorcist.
This is not Hollywood. It's not terror in a conventional sense. If you want to be scared, unless you have
a good imagination to really understand how slow and insidious these kinds of encounters can be,
this book is going to disappoint. It is not a horror novel nor is it the story the movie was based on.
These are, if you can believe them, true accounts. The writing isn't Shakespeare, but it's a quick,
easy read. Ralph tells his story very frankly. He was a NY City Police officer. This fact
is not in dispute. He saw some horrible things during his time as a Police officer.
And I know there are also many people out there who discount the content because
they can't possibly accept the stories at face value--they don't believe in God, they've
never seen anything that can't be explained, whatever.
I read with a skeptical, questioning mind. And I found the accounts credible because
of Ralph Sarchie's character and motive. We aren't talking about a saint here. Some of the
negative reviews point out that Ralph "curses like a sailor." Actually, he curses
like a NY City Police officer who's been through some seriously nasty stuff.
But the man just wants to help people who really need it. How can you fault that?
He doesn't claim to be a saint or a priest or anything else. He does what he does
for FREE only after the fact making some money off of it via the movie. He has
taken steps to get closer to God as a Catholic, yes, but that doesn't make him
perfect, and those reviews that expect perfection should be discounted outright.
And his side job has cost him dearly--far more than he will ever make telling the
story. The consequences of these encounters are far more terrifying yet less...
dramatic...than Hollywood. When you start to consider what the reality of
these encounters means, you start to understand just how much danger
these people are in--and I don't mean the physical danger.
It's a 5* book because this is Morpheus in the Matrix--trying to wake
people up to the reality that..
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio....

The Haunted
By Barbara L. Thorne
There are events that EMS (nurses, doctors, medics, police, fire dept) have seen in their line of work that they will admit simply has no scientific explanation. In clinical experience, patterns emerge and then you sometimes see for your own eyes that not everything can be scientifically explained. The author of this book describes exactly these types of experiences from his perspective and he writes with such honestly, clarity, and description that it makes you fear the dark spiritual unknown more than you ever thought you might. He takes you through some of his personal experiences in his off-duty hours and what he describes is frightening.
I purchased this book in hopes of seeking some clarity. Until recently, I considered myself an agnostic and perhaps even an atheist, until my daughter began being tormented by some strange entity in our house. This same house is the one I grew up in and have returned to as an adult & has always been 'haunted'. When we were kids (and even now) we all 'joked' about the ghost and each one of us had personal experiences, but it was less threatening and we somehow retained our credibility if we 'joked' about it instead of claiming it truth. Now these strange things are now happening to my little girl, increasing in frequency and severity and I fear for her physical & mental well being. I've exhausted other causes, explanations, and diagnosis. Nothing.
What is confusing to me is that when I approach religious people or people who claim to believe in God, they seem to disregard my claims as if whats happening simply cannot be possible, yet these are the same people who quote God & the Bible? Isn't it a fair assumption one would also believe in the Devil & demons ? Nope. Even after reading this I learned that the Catholic Church approaches these cases with incredible scrutiny. However, I did learn from this book that help is available, but almost impossible to find.

NOT scary, useful information, prayers AND tangents...
By Hot Hands
NOT terrifying I don't resonate with the fearful reviews. I found more comfort than fear in this book.
I think this book has some good information anyone interested in the occult, whether you believe in God or not, should read objectively. There is good information woven into the 'stories'...but I was not scared by them, rather felt empowered by the author's view of hope in God.
Things that stood out for me; most of the unexplained activity seems to come from demons, they can draw a person to a house (like I was drawn to the place I now live), and how to deal with them...don't...don't engage, don't invite, don't acknowledge, don't provoke. Pray, invite God into your life. Live a good life.
Also that evil people can put a hex on you...or send demons to you. (If you read about Mexican brujas, Santeria or voodoo there is much about this, but the author concludes that it is very real and has seen it happen). BUT whether or not you are troubled, unless you give your soul to Satan, it belongs to God.
I really appreciate the appendix of prayers at the end, I have spent a good portion of the last year praying daily, and it has shifted my home, I appreciate the exorcism prayers and never imagined the importance of praying the rosary--even though I was bought up Catholic and have one.
The downside of this book is that it is full of tangents...he starts a story, then goes off on a tangent...then back to the story, every chapter! Talk about 1 thing at a time, will ya? It's usually correlating his police work to his spiritual work, and I understand that it is significant, however it's repetitive, and in my opinion, takes away from the severity of the stories, not sure how this is being done in a movie? One story or vignettes? If I was a weak reader this would lose me entirely...I still am not sure what happened with the Santeria appliance human sacrifice guys...other than they end up in jail...was there a back story?
The author is also a student of Ed and Lorraine Warren, I never quite know if I think they are frauds or the real deal, they get as much bad press as good. RIP Ed.
